Summary
He has a past shrouded in mystery, a skeleton sheathed in indestructible metal, unbreakable claws that can cut through almost anything, and a mutant healing factor that can mend virtually any wound.
His friends call him Logan. The X-Men call him Wolverine.
While visiting Japan, he is recruited to recover a stolen experimental drug, one that has the potential to be a true miracle cure for all human disease - or a sadistic means of enslaving the world. With every hour bringing mankind closer to tragedy, he embarks on a daring mission to identify the thieves and thwart their terrifying agenda.
From the back alleys of Tokyo to the smugglers' coves of Brazil, from the opulent palaces of St. Petersburg to the war-torn villages of Africa, Logan's quest takes him from one deadly setting to the next. But his desperate last stand will test the limits of his abilities - and his courage - like never before.

Wolverine: What He Does Best
Extraordinary. I’ve been a fan of David Mack’s Star Trek work for over a decade. But this may be his single best novel. The author is clearly a fan of Wolverine from the 1980s, during the era of the 1983 limited series by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller, which sent Wolverine to Japan to learn about honor and himself. It also focused on ninjas, the Yakuza and The Hand. Here, Logan’s love of Mariko Yashida and all the things that have made him a beloved Marvel Comics character for generations are on shining display.
Mack’s trademark body count is tempered by believability in this setting. It makes sense. Logan is a primal force, flawed, angry and vulnerable. It’s a dark wonder to behold and Mack pulls it off without a hitch. Even the other mutants are written in a way that compliments instead of distracting. That’s not easy.
The narrator for this audiobook was amazing and enjoyable. I cannot imagine a more perfect Logan/Wolverine than this man’s voice. All the different dialects and accents were nicely handled. I really appreciated it.
As for the themes throughout the tale, I’m glad Mack chose to go for the human element. It’s what he does best.
Highly recommended, especially for fans of Wolverine from 1980s Marvel Comics.
