Summary
Famous, all-encompassing, passionate, but ultimately doomed love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, and how this unresolved passion eventually destroys them and the people around them. Today considered a classic of English literature, Wuthering Heights was met with mixed reviews when it first appeared, mainly because of the narrative's stark depiction of mental and physical cruelty. Wuthering Heights has also given rise to many adaptations and inspired works, including films, radio, television dramatisations, a musical by Bernard J. Taylor, a ballet, three operas (respectively by Bernard Herrmann, Carlisle Floyd, and Frédéric Chaslin), a role-playing game, and the 1979 chart topping song by Kate Bush.

The story is academically well written.
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The story is good and the characters feel real. The theme is dark and features strongly about the main character Heathcliff, who is a cruel and abusive male, who ruins everyone's life that he comes into contact with. Heathcliff is obsessed with Cathy, whom he can't have and is determined to be cruel to everyone related to her and seek revenge for his not being able to have her.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I don't think changing the story is the issue for it is a strong story and it is a dark themed with gothic elements that crosses genres.
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Emma Messenger?
I thought this narrator's poor attempt to echo the native accent was too painful to hear.
Do you think Wuthering Heights [Trout Lake Media Edition] needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
I do not think it needs to have a follow up book because it ended with a lighter happier ending that the reader was comfortable with.
Any additional comments?
I don't think this is a love story like some have depicted. I think the novel is good and very tragic and was relieved with the ending result.

Spoiled
Most people know the story of Wuthering Heights, but for me this audio version was completely spoiled by the American narrator and I have not been able to listen all the way through.

Fantastic
Great audiobook. A timeless classic that I have read over and over again but the expression in narrator Emma Messenger's voice kept me on the edge of my seat even though I knew the story very well! Used to frequently use audiobooks as a child as I often struggled to get to sleep. I had forgotten just how therapeutic it is to be read to - really adds another dimension to the experience. Narration is smooth and is very handy to have on my mobile phone when I don't have that extra space to lug a book around. I especially recommend for those with long daily commutes.

The beauty was lost.
I have to agree with others who have commented that her accent spoils the story.

Exceptional
Emma Messenger narrates this dark and troubled love story beautifully. Having listened to it twice (so far) I do detect her slight American accents coming though in parts but it doesn't distract from the Englishness of the characters and setting at all. Emily Bronte's description of each personality is just incredible as is her use of the English language. She makes you feel like a voyeur. My favourite Bronte read by far.

Why would you choose an American to read Bronte?
What disappointed you about Wuthering Heights?
I was completely put off by the narrator's accent. She couldn't pronounce the northern dialect and even words like 'lass' sounded foreign and as if she was struggling. There are so many great northern English actresses so why choose an American? I had to forego the pleasure of revisiting Emily Bronte's masterpiece and stop listening.
What didn’t you like about Emma Messenger’s performance?
