Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Eccentric, infamous and exceedingly wealthy, the romantic novelist Cassandra Tipp has, it seems, vanished.

In her large, rambling house sits a pile of paper addressed to her niece and nephew. It is a letter. Cassie has been a murder suspect twice in her life. Her family have long been convinced of her guilt. Could the letter be her confession? Or might it be her last will and testament? It turns out to be not quite what anyone expected....

Instead of any indication of remorse, the letter tells two extraordinary and darkly disturbing stories. One, is of their aunt’s lifelong relationship with a creature called Pepper-Man - a tale of bloody nights and magical gifts, of children lost to the woods, of husbands made from twigs and leaves and sticks and stones.

The other story is that of an abused little girl growing crooked in the shadows. Which story should the niece and nephew believe? And where is Cassie now? Dead in a ditch, or gone from this world...and into another?

You Let Me In is at once the tale of a faerie seduction and a story about an abused child. Crossing the boundaries between magic and reality, we are shown our world, judgmental and cruel, and offered glimpses of another dark and very different place that is hidden to most of us. Both stories might be true. Both stories end in murder....

Gripping story excellently read!

This has been one of the best audio books I've listened to - and in one sitting! I was absolutely hooked by such a different view on a difficult subject. Left me thinking about it for days afterwards.
Also read excellently - which makes such a difference! Cannot recommend enough :)

I absolutely adored this

Beautiful, atmospheric, grim, gritty and magical. I was taken to places of horror and wonder, encased in enchantment and held over precipices. Narration is perfect and the story…..well, words fail me.

What a beautiful story!

This is one of the best books I have read in a really long time, very original idea that resonated with me, and I think pokes at some deeper philosophical questions of what the truth is, what it means and how we can live in a world with conflicting and differing truths. I thought the prose was gorgeous and the narrator did a really good job of reading it, I found myself enthralled. Whether or not you choose to believe it was "real", the faerie world was depicted in sensuous detail and I loved that it was described as very dark place full of earthly, sometimes unpleasant smells and sights, as well as beauty, I felt that captured the trueness of the natural world a little more. I can see that it would be hard to categorise this book, which I personally think lends to its appeal. For me it part fairytale, with a bit of a mystery, but with an underlying current of how trauma can affect every thread of your life.

Very cleverly written

A very complex story but well worth the listen. It is a tragic story, one which grips you because you don't know quite what to believe. It is definitely about sexual and emotional abuse of not just one person but two which does become obvious towards the end of the book. What is really fascinating about this book is how the characters are intertwined that it really is down to the listener to make up their own mind as to what really is true.

Not for me

Gave up at chapter 8.

Unfortunately just couldn’t get into it.

Starts off well then slowly declines.

Kept me enthralled and wanting more

I love a good fairy story - one based on the old tales, not the watered down child friendly versions. This is all that and more. I did occasionally find the volume went a bit too quiet, but not enough to put me off. If you like your fair folk to come with teeth, manipulation, and murder, then this is the tale for you on a dark night. Sit back and be glad they didn’t choose you....

A must listen

Dark, mesmerising and utterly fascinating. One of the best faerie stories I've read so far. Highly recommended winter read ❄💜❄

unusual but excellent

I struggled to warm to this story at first - I couldn't see where it was going but I found myself becoming increasingly gripped by it. The characters are extraordinary and the narration is perfect for the tone of the story. It left me wondering about it for days, in the way great stories do.
