About this listen
From the #1 Kickstarter campaign of all time—#1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson adds to his Cosmere universe shared by Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive with a new standalone novel especially for fans of fantasy romances. Narrated by Kate Reading and Michael Kramer.
There is a world. One of endless night, surrounded by an even deeper darkness. Filled with nightmares come to life, twisted shapes that slink to windows and ease open doors, sliding across floors to look down on helpless faces.
There is another world. A bright world, so bright it burns. Filled with stacked stones that call forth miracles, raised by callused hands that tremble in their work, drained with each stone lifted, settled, lifted again.
Between these worlds two souls connect. Collide. Entwine.
A bridge. A path.
A road to both worlds changing forever.
Yumi has spent her entire life in strict obedience, granting her the power to summon the spirits that bestow vital aid upon her society—but she longs for even a single day as a normal person. Painter patrols the dark streets dreaming of being a hero—a goal that has led to nothing but heartache and isolation, leaving him always on the outside looking in. In their own ways, both of them face the world alone.
Suddenly flung together, Yumi and Painter must strive to right the wrongs in both their lives, reconciling their past and present while maintaining the precarious balance of each of their worlds. If they cannot unravel the mystery of what brought them together before it’s too late, they risk forever losing not only the bond growing between them, but the very worlds they’ve always struggled to protect.
Note from Brandon:
Even for a compulsive planner like me, sometimes a story emerges like magic. Unexpected, unprompted. You build an outline in days, craft worlds during a compulsive daydream, and develop characters with a burst of imagination like the brief flash of a firework.
That was Yumi and the Nightmare Painter for me. The unanticipated story of two people who find one another.
May your dreams live as mine sometimes do.

Great story with lots of twists
Engaging and surprising, and just the right pace! One of Sanderson’s best in my opinion. Makes more sense if you’ve read “The way of kings”, but it really isn’t necessary.

A new favourite
Absolutely loved this book, the world building, characters and overall writing is incredible as always. The romantic theme did not result in any less of an well thought out fantasy story, and I expect this is not the last time i read this book.

something a bit different from Sanderson
Nice ideas and charachters. Sandersons small novellas (secret projects) are better than most people's standard books and his writing rate is unbelievable luckily for us. shame he couldn't give a few tips to Rothfuss and Martin.

A masterpiece
It's seldom I find myself so genuinely moved by a story. Like one of the inspirations, Kimi no nawa (Your Name) I found myself heartbroken, inspired and deeply affected by the twists and turns of the story in the final third of the book (the anime also has an extremely emotional final act). This was one of the best, most genuine and unpredictable pieces of storytelling. Ever. The first two acts were amazing, intriguing, at times funny and always full of heart, but I found myself tearing up for the end, constantly. Letting out tears of sadness and jubilation until the sun came up, forgetting time for a while, forgetting the need to sleep, spellbound by a master of his work.
Highly recommended, 5/5

Fantastic story.
Sanderson delivers again, like always. A fantastic world building, and a great story with several unexpected twists. a Although I really like blev the narrators I would have preferred it if this one was Kramer only, since the characters spend most of the book together it just felt off with different voices, and Hoid is the constant narrator, which is why Kramer would have felt better.

Fantastic book!!
Very much enjoyed this book, looked the setting and the twists Sanderson is so good at setting up. Yumi and Painter are brilliant characters, with deep and rich personalities and backstories. The world feels incredibly grounded for a one-shot story too, which impressed me a lot considering Sanderson's style of world building, something he likes to do slowly.
The book does have a more YA approaching compared to Mistborn and Stormlight, something I wasn't expecting, but I knew very little about this book going into it. YA isn't to my particular taste any more, but that didn't take away my enjoyment of the book.
My *only* criticism comes down to narration decisions/direction - not the narration itself. Kate Reading and Michael Kramer are well established and beloved narrators, who have have worked on Sanderson's books for years, however this book highlights the problem of having two narrators more than any other - constantly swapping per chapter. I am off the belief that each narrator should consistently, throughout the book, voice the same character, and so when the POV changes, and so too does the narrator, it jars me to hear Painter portrayed by Reading, or Yumi by Kramer. Why not have the same narrator stick to those characters throughout? It's more work, sure, but it would create a much more consistent and satisfying performance, and is the only thing that lets this book down.
Regardless, for the book itself, I would thoroughly recommend anyone to read this, it would be a fantastic first read for people looking to get into the Cosmere but are daunted by the idea of the long series involved.
