Law Enforcement Life Coach / Sometimes Heroes Need Help Podcast

By: John Kelly
  • Summary

  • What happens when you're the threat to your own survival. Making ourselves a priority by addressing the threats that come from within starts the conversation. A podcast focused on caring and improving the lives for those that give of themselves when there is nothing left to give. Although the program is primarily centered around the first responder, the life lessons and struggles are universal in nature. The program addresses and looks to improve the lives of first responders by addressing our personal, professional, financial, physical and mental health. Historically difficult conversations to have are normalized and stigmas associated with asking for help are removed.

  • 2024 Southeastern Field Training Officers Association Conference
    May 20 2024

This past week I had the honor of presenting at the 2024 SEFTOA conference. Field training officers from around the country were in attendance.I sat down with Mike Schentrup from Advanced Police Concepts as we discussed each day in review. If we are going to change the culture of this profession it must start with those that are entering it and the first person they come in contact with to impact them is their FTO. The role the FTO plays is life defining for the newly hired officer. Getting this right can not be left to chance. The conference focused on how we do a better job of taking care of our people but just as important, how we do a better job of taking care of ourselves. As you listen to this episode, think back about the role your FTO played in your life and their influence in providing you a foundation to launch a career from. Until next week, Take care of yourself and each other, God Bless, John

  • Chad Bruckner / The Holy Trinity of Successful and Healthy Police Organizations
    May 13 2024

Chad Bruckner, a husband, father, veteran, retired police officer, author and friend sat down with me this week to discuss life, leadership, and how we do a better job at being human. We discussed his latest work, "The Holy Trinity of Successful and Healthy Police Organizations", and the journey that brought him to this place. One of the most impactful quotes from his book came in the form of a text from his wife one night when he was struggling. His wife Kristen told him" One day you will retire as a cop but you will never retire as a father...". A great reminder for all, you are not your job, it can be noble and a source of pride but it can never be allowed to define our existence. Our conversation will redefine, remind and provide you a roadmap to stay the course.

  • Meagan McCarthy / Law Enforcement Mental Health Advocate / FOX News Contributor
    May 6 2024

Meagan McCarthy, a former San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputy is grateful to be alive. A firearm malfunction would keep the p.o.s. suspect from executing her.

If processing that critical incident wasn't enough, the state of California would be there to betray her as well. In California, jurors that have implicit bias against police officer are allowed to serve on juries. Her constitutional rights violated, she was victimized a second time during this incident with the suspect receiving a not guilty verdict.

Meagan McCarthy could have allowed this tragedy to define her, instead she used it as a call to action. Meagan and I discuss the incident that started this initiative and how she has become an advocate for our profession.

What challenges have you faced that have ignited your passion?

    More about Meagan
As an advocate, I use my communication and show hosting skills to fight for the rights and well-being of victims and first responders. I have appeared on multiple Fox News segments as a contributor, sharing my insights and perspectives on law enforcement and mental health issues.

I am working towards my completion of a bachelor's degree in psychology from National University, which helps me understand the psychological challenges and needs of those who have experienced trauma or violence. I am also a retired Deputy Sheriff, who served for over six years at the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, until I was medically retired due to PTSD. I received the Above and Beyond Award for my advocacy work from Crime Survivors in October 2023.

My goal is to end harmful legislation for police in California and to bring awareness to mental health in police across the world. I believe that by sharing my story and educating the public, I can make a positive difference in the lives of others who have suffered or are suffering from similar situations.
