Beth Wictum is lab director of the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory (VGL) at the University of California at Davis. It's a forensics lab that helps investigators solve crimes using animal DNA. For instance: a key clue in a sexual-assault conviction was dog urine. The victim was unable to identify the suspect but her dog had relieved himself on his truck during the assault.

Pelosi represents California's 8th district, which covers most of the city of San Francisco. She's held the post since 1987.

Actress Annette Bening and linguist Geoff Nunberg on this edition of Fresh Air. Annette Bening is starring in the new film adaptation of Augusten Burrough's memoir, Running With Scissors. She was nominated for Oscars for her roles in Being Julia, American Beauty, and The Grifters. She is married to actor Warren Beatty and has four children.
