Shadow Dancer is a horse, an all-black, all-Arabian thoroughbred. Her owner, Cody Lang, discovers a murder has taken place on his ranch, and the chief suspect is next-door neighbor Donna Louise Stattler, who had the ribbon found next to the body. An FBI agent, Carol Flynn, comes to the small town of Clark, Montana, to investigate the murder and is amazed to hear the name Stattler. The Stattlers are believed to be the main source of methamphetamine in Montana. Agent Flynn goes after the Stattlers, and Shadow Dancer watches it all come to an explosive climax on the Fourth of July.

Madeline and her best friend, Larue, sneak out at midnight to find out why the dogs cry all night and discover the dog fight in progress. Madeline intervenes, trying to save the dogs, but is chased from the farm with the dogs still in danger. Madeline and her father report the crime to the sheriff of their small Arkansas town, only to find the sheriff is in cahoots with Percival. The Humane Society calls in the State Police.
