南九州市知覧には太平洋戦争末期、本土最南端の陸軍特攻基地が置かれ、この地から多くの若者が沖縄へ向けて飛び立ちました。21世紀を担う若者を中心に、命の尊さ・平和の大切さについて考えていただきたいという願いから平成2年から「平和へのメッセージfrom知覧」スピーチコンテストを開催。第25回スピーチコンテンストで当時中学生だった山口真希穂さんの最優秀賞作品「1036の命」をご本人がご朗読。
