Louisiana, 2065. A lot has changed in the 43rd year of the Kurian Order. It has been three years since David Valentine's forced exile from his friends and allies in the war against the Kurians. But that hasn't stopped him from fighting his own battles and his personal demons. Brought back into the fold by his old teacher, Duvalier, Valentine discovers that the Lightweavers, Earth's allied in the conflict, have all but vanished. Without their aid, mankind cannot possibly stand against the Reapers and other life-forms the Kurians use to subjugate the planet.

In a valiant rebellion against a half century of occupation by the Kurians, the newly formed Texas Republic and Ozark Free Territory have dealt the vampiric aliens their first major defeat. Resistance member David Valentine is revered as a hero for his part in fighting to regain Earth's freedom. But a dangerous enemy within his own ranks soon has Valentine facing charges for his handling of the Quisling prisoners - humans who have become pawns of the Kurians in order to survive.

The race is on to claim the area between the Ohio River and Tennessee. What's left of the resistance is hiding out in the tangle of central Kentucky hills - leaving the powerful, well-organized Kurian vampires the opportunity to fill the void. Major David Valentine knows there's only one way for them to find help before the Kurians settle in: a desperate dash by hijacked rail, followed by a harrowing river journey. Valentine unites friends old and new in the effort - but the Kurian Order won't easily yield.
