Shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2019

Brought to you by Penguin.

'In the first minute following her death, Leila's consciousness began to ebb, slowly and steadily, like a tide receding from the shore. Her brain cells, having run out of blood, were now completely deprived of oxygen. But they did not shut down. Not right away....'

Our brains stay active for 10 minutes after our heart stops beating. For Leila, each minute brings with it a new memory: growing up with her father and his wives in a grand old house in a quiet Turkish town; watching the women gossip and wax their legs while the men went to mosque; sneaking cigarettes and Western magazines on her way home from school; running away to Istanbul to escape an unwelcome marriage; falling in love with a student who seeks shelter from a riot in the brothel where she works.

Most importantly, each memory reminds Leila of the five friends she met along the way - friends who are now desperately trying to find her....

Sad and yet so beautifully written

This is the first novel I have ever listened through an audible and I am so glad that I chose it.

Amazing narration for a truly engrossing story

Quite simply the best audiobook narration I have encountered to date - Alix Dunmore’s performance really brought the story and the individual characters to life. I absolutely loved it.

Engaging, fun and sad, unusual and special!

I just loved this. An original story with love and laughter and sadness too. The narrator is wonderful. I was gripped by it. An easy read but not lightweight material at all. Yet another book set in Turkey which I have loved.

Yet another mesmerising tale from Elif Shafak.

The way Elif intertwines fictional people with facts give all her books that added depth for me. I've learned so much about Turkey and it's history and more through listening to her stories. This is the fourth book of hers that I have listened to and not once have I felt that the story is a repetition of the last one even though some of the characters turn up in other books.
I loved every minute and cant wait for the next.

A Very Sad Tale

I found this book difficult to follow initially. Then I felt, that I needed to know how it would end. I think it's too far fetched,.

Enthralling story of friendship and beliefs

I was entranced by the story from beginning to end. A world and story unfamiliar to me told in vivid detail that I felt I was on the streets of instanbul
