About this listen

'Satisfyingly intriguing' Faith Martin

'J.M. Hall has mastered the warmth of a perfect modern cosy crime with all the twists and turns that go with it. I really enjoyed it!' Hannah Hendy

Retired schoolteachers and amateur sleuths Liz, Pat and Thelma are giving up their coffee morning for a brand-new mystery.

Retired teachers Pat, Liz and Thelma are happiest whiling away their hours over coffee, cake and chat at the Thirsk Garden Centre café.

But when their good friend tells them about an unsettling experience she had in a sinister-feeling charity shop, they simply can’t resist investigating…

Because the entire shop has vanished into thin air.

Before long, our trio of unlikely sleuths find themselves embroiled in a race against the clock to get to the bottom of this mystery – but who has a secret to hide and how far will they go to keep it concealed?

Only time will tell…

Fun engaging read

The 3rd book in the series. The characters and storylines are growing in depth and strength. Julie narrates with warmth and passion and I could honestly listen to her reading the telephone directory! Such a soothing real voice and great characterisation!! Already bought book 4 and looking forward to the next!! Really loving this gentle mystery series - thank you J M Hall!!!

This book is an absolute joy!

3rd book in the crime lives of Pat, Liz & Thelma, 1st book was wonderful, but sadly 2nd book I didn't enjoy as much but this book the characters personalities are now more rounded and defined so my enjoyment was heightened. Even better then book 1 and show's J.M Hall developing his offering to the reader/listener.
J.M Hall's writing paints a picture in your mind of these characters without overdoing the detail so it allows your mind to create Pat, Liz & Thelma plus their family.
With Julie Hesmondhalgh as narrator & J.M Hall's writing they go together like Apple Crumble & Custard. Long may that continue. Bravo!

Excellent narration as always

I binged this audiobook in a couple of days, the characters are well written and the local areas are so familiar that it feels as though you are there with them.
A slightly wobbly Scottish accent but that just added to the charm and excellent narration from Julie Hesmondhalgh.
I had guessed many of the outcomes before they were revealed but that just gave a sense of pride that I can see what JM Hall was planning although the outcome seemed a little rushed after a long run up.
My only complaint is that I have to wait another year until book four is released!

Why

Sorry, despite all the wonderful reviews I couldn't see the point. The three friends seemed to be investigating a non-event. I got about half way through and gave up. Whilst the reader is good, it is rather ironic to have a lancashire lass narrating something set in North Yorkshire! Couldn't the producers find someone from God's Own Country, the Wars of the Roses is still going on in case they didn't know. Glad I got it as a Daily Deal and didn't waste a credit.

Predictable story, not the best narration

Overall enjoyable and had potential but the ending was clear from some way off. Almost felt a bit drawn out. The narration had virtually no distinction between characters, which made it hard to follow their parts at times. I love this genre but this one didn't quite grab me.

thoroughly enjoyable

I'm really growing to like these 3 main characters as the series goes on. A nice enjoyable, easy read.

Jarring in places

Here’s my problem. I’ve listened to all three books and I like them a lot. The trouble is one of the main characters (Thelma) accent has changed even though it’s the same narrator. It’s gone from a Yorkshire-ish accent in the first two books to a posh and proper one. When you listen to all of the books back to back it’s so noticeable it’s jarring. It’s the same narrator, so I don’t know how this is happened It’s such a shame because apart from this, I think the narrator is really good. It’s just difficult to get past it.
I recommend if you are listening to all of the books you leave a big gap between book 2 and book 3. Hopefully this will solve the problem
Also unlike the first two, this book contains quite a bit of swearing so not suitable for listening to when there are young ones around

Good story

I didn’t realise this was a series however didn’t matter re the story which I enjoyed. It irritated me how often the author made comments regarding characters weight and figure to the point where I would roll my eyes waiting for ‘plump’ to be mentioned. Was needless and annoying
