Summary

Each time my mother laid a finger on me...it was another step into the jaws of hell. Her abuse, more so than any other, destroyed me. It was the ultimate betrayal.

Abused from the age of eight by her older brother and then her step-father, Maureen Wood quickly became numb to the constant suffering. But Maureen’s world crumbled when her own mother started to abuse her too....

A Family Secret is the harrowing true story of how one little girl survived sickening abuse by the people who should have loved her most and how an innocent baby finally saved her.

Sad story

Loved it so sad .mother who did my care wonder if she was an abuse victim also as had no empathy for her daughter .I'm glad she had happiness in the end with her own kids and her brother and stepdad were brought to justice.

Good but sad

Very good account of her real life abuse, I kept thinking just tell someone but when I thought back to my own childhood abuse (nowhere near as bad as this) I remembered that I didn't tell anybody for years either! Very sad in parts but very honest, well worth a listen if you can cope with the reality.

Wow!

This was a very hard listen but well worth it.
We sadly know too many stories of child abuse, especially at the hands of men, but to hear of abuse from a woman - a mother abusing her own daughter - makes it even worse somehow.
What a brave lady Maureen is, to not only get it all to court, but to write it all down in book form.

I wish her & her fmaily all the very best & hope they contunune to heal from their abuse.

Hard to stomach - written by a hero!

Everyone has a story, but few people are able to relate one as traumatic and containing such tragedies as this without self-pity and with the candour this author does. It raises questions and is shocking to read, but the author’s bravery and determination shines through. The narrator is very expressive and empathic and though this is one of the most chilling stories’ve ever read it has those moments that bring a smile from out of nowhere too.

Remarkable story!!

The narrator is fabulous and the writer very skilled. This is a harrowing account of the entire life story of an absolute survivor of sexual abuse and tornent at the hands of not one but three family members including her mother and a system that failed her from the start .... an incredible insightful and inspirational read - highly recommend!

Heart Wrenching

A traumatic personal story of Maureen Wood. I listened to this in a day as the true story was shocking but also Maureen is a strong lady and proven that justice does prevail.

Harrowing and heart wrenching story.

From the get go this true story had me gripped. I was a little put off by the narrator at first as it is read as if reading to a child. However once I’d got used to it it was fine.
It makes you think about the things that go on behind closed doors that are abhorrent and how they can go unnoticed.
It’s heartbreaking to know that this still happens in society today and children will still be too scared to tell.
