About this listen

The last thing Emerson Rose expects is to fall for his best friend, Rhys, especially since he’s never been attracted to a man before. Everything in his life is already complicated enough. He’s put his own future on hold to raise his two younger siblings, and confusing feelings for the guy who always has his back muddy the waters even more. But then something astonishing happens. For one perfect moment, he thinks Rhys might feel the same - only to have his world come crashing down around him a second time.

Rhys Lancaster has always known he’s gay and that Emerson isn’t. Best friends since childhood, their easy companionship has usually been enough. Between his job, his adrenaline-filled adventures, and hanging out with Emerson and his siblings, he has it good...until he wakes up in the hospital with no memories of the last year of his life.

Like they normally do when things go horribly wrong, Rhys and Emerson support each other. Frustrated by all he’s lost, Rhys stays with Emerson during his recovery, and Emerson helps Rhys through the fog, while pushing those other feelings aside. To make matters worse, Rhys knows Emerson’s keeping something from him. Everything feels different now when he looks at Emerson, and as they fall into a comfortable routine, that aching desire doesn’t stay buried for long.

But Emerson has a family to raise, and Rhys is struggling to figure out what’s going on inside his head. Unless they can push past the doubts and fears to seal that connection between them again, this tragedy might become the one each has to weather alone.

Wonderful story and wonderful narration

This was a beautiful story filled with so many emotions. It was very sweet but also tragic and heartwrenching at times and angsty but overall very heartwarming and wonderful with some steamy scenes near the end.

I felt that this as very well written. The characters were all wonderful, not just the 2 MCs. The little boy was quite the little character. The Mcs had amazing chemistry and their relationship development at a natural rate over time. It was lovely listening to best friends fall slowly in love with each other and realize they probably always have. I absolutely could not stop listening and listened to this all at once.

Kale gave an amazing performance and brought the story to life. He expressed all the emotions really well. He had a very pleasant reading voice and did different character voices that were well done and suited the characters well. Not only the 2 MCs but the kids voicee and the female voices were also wonderful.

Best friends to lovers

I enjoyed this book, and the characters went through many heartaches considering their ages. Moreover, it was done in a very respectful way.

Emerson is Demi, but it takes him a while to realise. His best friend Rhys is gay. They planned their lives and college, but life got in their way.

Their relationship blossoms and is well written.

A new to me narrator, Kale Williams, was a pleasure to listen to, clean and concise. I speed this narration up to 1.40 on Audible, which is usual for me.

Sweet and Tender

A Kaleidoscope of Butterflies is a standalone contemporary novel that tugged hard on my heartstrings. Emerson and Rhys have faced struggles, but no matter what, they have been there for each other. I thought this was a really beautiful and sweet romance that dealt with some very difficult situations in a tender manner. I was so delighted with the happy ending. The audiobook was narrated by Kale Williams who did a fantastic job with voicing all the characters. I really enjoyed listening to the audiobook and thought the production was well done.

Came for the narrator. Stayed for the story.

I initially requested to review this audiobook because of the narrator. I love Kale Williams' smooth, gentle, melodious voice, and I would happily listen to anything he narrated. However, after I started listening, the story captivated me, and I listened to the whole thing in one sitting. I really appreciated that one of the characters was demi-sexual. This was my first read/listen with a demi MC, and I enjoyed learning more about that sexual orientation. I really enjoyed this audiobook. The changes brought about in Rhys' desires and goals, along with the memory loss, seemed very realistic and sensitively handled. I loved the way Rhys and Emerson reforged their relationship and deep friendship after Rhys' accident. I loved the analogy between Rhys' and the caterpillars' transformations. The tragedies the Rose family and Rhys suffered were heart-breaking. but it was so beautiful how they all recovered and came together supporting each other and healing. I loved Rhys and Emerson, and also Emerson's siblings, Audrey and Sam. A beautiful story of family, friendship, loss, love, recovery, and healing.

The narration was fantastic. The emotions were all so well-handled and not overly dramatic. The tone and pacing were perfect.

I received a free review copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

A beautiful novel!

Christina Lee is the Queen of the tender moment and this story is perhaps the most tender of all her novels to date. Having lost both parents, Emerson, unsure but determined, is raising his two younger siblings. When his best friend since childhood, Rhys, is hurt in a climbing accident, Em takes care of him too. I found this to be a beautiful novel about self-discovery and trust. The gentle nature of the two main characters, their long-standing friendship, and the mutual care and support within the family, all work to make the slowly unfolding romance moving and hard-won. 🎧 Kale Williams provides an unhurried and compassionate narration, matching the peaceful and poignant prose perfectly.

Tragically beautiful!

So much tragedy weaved into a story of hope, love and family! This story is just so heartwarming!!

I loved cautious and protective Emerson. He's faced so much tragedy in his life and sacrificed so much for those he loves that he deserved his happily ever after. I like the way he realised (& discovered) his demisexuality and I love that he and Rhys have been falling in love for their whole lives.

Rhys is the perfect counter to Emerson. he's bold, confident and daring, yet has to face tragedy and the concequeces of his accident. (The butterfly moment was truly beautiful and I was in tears.)

These two belong together and their journey was long and devastating but they complete each other and they're family! Christina did not hold back, my heart broke and raged at the tragedy these characters faced but the underlying strength, hope and love will lift you up. I loved it! so beautiful!!

Made me happy.

This is a heartwarming friends to lovers story. Rhys and Emerson have been BFF’s since they were young. They live across from each other and were involved in each other’s families. They are totally different in personality. Emerson is a reserved guy while Rhys is outgoing. Yet they stayed BFF’s. They both have issues that enter into the path their lives take. Emerson’s the guardian to his younger siblings. Their parents died leaving him the responsibility of raising them. That changed his college and future plans completely.
Then Rhys has a rock climbing accident that leaves him without his memory. Before the accident the two felt a stronger attraction but didn’t address it. Emerson was originally convinced Rhys was straight so he only hoped they could remain BFF’s. Then an incident brought that into question. Now after the accident neither guy is sure of their future. Emerson knows Rhys doesn’t remember them getting closer that one time. Rhys feels something being held back from him but he isn’t sure what. While he is recovering, Rhys spends more time with the Rose family. He starts to want to fit in more of their daily lives. I really liked how the author handled this journey. The caring between these two from the beginning just made me happy. I feel the narration by Kale Williams is perfect. His tone and delivery for these characters made the story relaxing and enjoyable.
