Summary
Depression is one of the UK's leading causes of disability. One in four women in their 40s is prescribed antidepressant drugs, but depression is a sign of malfunction of the body, not the brain, and it can be treated with simple lifestyle interventions.
The UK's mental well-being is in a state of crisis - psychiatric drugs are overprescribed and the causes of depression and anxiety oversimplified as a genetic and brain malfunction. This book debunks the myths and sets out a natural cure for depression, proving that low serotonin levels are not the primary cause of depression but that inflammation is the root cause, and this can be treated by way of lifestyle changes.
The book explores the truth about depression, including the latest science and how our genes express themselves through the food choices we make, as well as Dr Brogan's four-week plan with menus. Written in a lively style and laced with compelling scientific proof, this groundbreaking book proves that symptoms of depression are often markers of an underlying problem originating outside the brain which can be effectively treated without pharmaceuticals.

Incomplete!
This book was fantastic! It was great to listen to rather than read because in parts it gets fairly involved with data and figures which would be a chore to read.
It is read in an easy to understand way.
HOWEVER, having been inspired by the book to try the author's menu plan I was disappointed that this is NOT INCLUDED in the audible version. Customer services confirmed this. I ended up buying the paperback just to get the menu plan.
If the menu plan was available with the audible version I would give this book 5 stars.

Finally, something that makes sense of it all
There's so much conflicting advice and information out there, and there are so many vested interests that stand in the way of us getting at the truth about health and nutrition.
This is the first time I have found a compelling narrative that puts together all the important aspects of health and wellbeing and has enough science backing it up to give the reader real confidence in what is being presented.
It's only a shame that it's presented as being 'for women'. This information is for everyone and very much needed. Thank you Dr Brogan for pushing back against the boundaries of accepted practice and the standard narrative and for bringing this all together. In a more enlightened society this understanding would be instantly transformative. Here's to a world where we can act on advances in scientific knowledge without coming up against the power of big pharma, agribusiness and the rest.

What was most disappointing about Dr Kelly Brogan’s story?
I am disappointed that recipes page 281 are NOT INCLUDED in the audible version. There should be information on the main page that the audiobook does not include it. I am currently leasing with the customer service.

Dangerous pseudo science
I haven’t been able to finish this book because of the extreme and dangerous views of the author. Now I maybe wrong, but I swear I heard her say that ALL medication is bad. I have congenital hypothyroidism and would be dead if it wasn’t for my meds! The same with diabetics, etc.
She then goes on to say birth control pills are bad, hospital care is bad and that she’s an anti-vaxxer. She lost all credibility for me then.
There are some things she said (like gut health/ the ‘second brain’) which I found fascinating, but then she’d spoil it by coming out with a load of rubbish. Plus I live in the UK where the health service is completely different to the US.

Not a fan, interesting opinions
I found this book a bit can and can’t as to what you can have nutritionally and feel it neglects the theory of moderation and balance suggesting a blanket no dairy no gluten works for everyone as they are “evil”. Knowing many bread eating milk drinking happy healthy 90 year olds I feel it’s extreme to suggest we all must change our diet the same way without addressing our culture and therefore genetics, climate and ancestors. Interesting intro to link between mind and body but unrealistic in regards to living to this plan in current circumstances without being affluent to afford supplements, and a change of lifestyle beyond day to day living as a modern city dweller.

One of the greatest books a woman could read
Kelly, thank you so much for the knowledge you have imparted in this book. I feel this is the book that has pieced everything together for me and helped me make sense of my symptoms. It also provides all the tools needed to restore vibrancy. It is truly an amazing read and I will be buying the hard copy as a manual for life. Thank you once again!
