How can a dead woman avenge herself on her killer 20 years after her murder?
This is the puzzle facing Ben Devlin in his latest case. He is called to the scene of a murder - a man has been stabbed to death in his rented room and when his identity is discovered Devlin feels a ghost walk over his grave as he knows the name Brooklyn Harris well. As a teenager, Harris beat his then-girlfriend Hannah Row to death, and then spent 12 years in prison for the murder.
As Devlin investigates the dead man's movements since his release, it becomes apparent Harris has been grooming teenage girls online and then arranging to meet them. But his activities have been discovered by others, notably a vigilante, who goes straight to the top of Devlin's list of suspects...until he uncovers that Harris was killed on the anniversary of Hannah's death - just too big a coincidence in Devlin's books. So Hannah's family join the ever-growing list of suspects being interviewed by his team. And then forensics contact Devlin with the astounding news that blood found on Harris's body is a perfect match to that of Hannah Row's. Yet how can this be; the girl was murdered many years ago - and Devlin doesn't believe in ghosts.

McGilloway has a beautiful way with words and the narration made this one even more gut wrenching. Eloquent and gut wrenching, dark themes handled with the lightest touch.

Very moving and interesting story
I liked the narrators voice and timbre it felt very personal.
The story was gripping and moving the father son relationship and the need for order in the time of chaos.
Was sad when it was finished.

More than just a crime story
I have been a fan of Brian McGilloway's crime novels since the beginning. In this lamest book, I really got a sense of how much Ben Devlin had aged and feel he is at a time in his life where he's looking for lot's of answers.
As far as the crime solving goes, it's great to see him team up again with his colleague Jim Hendry in PSNI, and even better that he has now finally met Jim's colleague Lucy Black.....who will be all kinds of fhelp to Devlin in later books I'm sure.
But as I said thos book is more than just a crime story.
The crime will have you to question your attitudes to criminals and victims. Are all victims equal or is there such a thing as a hierarchy of victimhood?
Intertwined through the crime story is the emotional journey Ben Devlin is on as his father nears his end of life. Brian McGilloway captures this with beautiful sensitivity and emotion and if you have ever lost a parent then be prepared to relive some of those emotions.
All of this is happening while Ben and the community grapple with the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and he initial consequences of the Brexit vote.

and told with such an understanding of the tangled Web that is human emotions and actions. I love his writing.

Outstanding narration for an excellent book.
The bar was already set very high in narrators such as Morgan C Jones and the great Gerard Doyle, but Owen McDonnell’s narration was flawless.

sure it's a good enough story, topical in 2020, but it's very slow, not very exciting or even interesting.
