About this listen

It is summer 1941, and the country is still at war. In the Devon village of Ashleigh, however, evacuees from the London blitz are living in an atmosphere of rural peacefulness, although Daisy Ricketts of Bermondsey isn't sure if she'll ever get on with carping Mrs Mumford, the subject of whispers because of her husband's mysterious disappearance.

David, the elder son of Tommy and Vi Adams, meets Kate Trimble, a cockney girl from Camberwell who has just arrived in Ashleigh with her aunt. Kate is imaginative and precocious, while David is happy-go-lucky, and as the war is directly affecting the lives of so many other members of the Adams family, Kate and David establish a friendship in the summer sunshine of Devon. But as their friendship develops some exciting undercurrents, an incident occurs which brings home to them the darker intrigues of wartime and provides a devastating shock to everyone.

Very good

This book made me think of my Great Uncle who lost his life at the Somme. He was 18yrs old. Death assumed as they were slaughtered. Very interesting to hear what these usually young people went through & did for their Country.

fantastic narration

fantastic narration as always. Charming storyline, but enough of Polly already! I really wish she were written out of these books long ago. Also I do wish the narrator would stop saying she said he said she said, its so annoying. We know who is speaking we don't need to be told.

An improvement on the last book

This was a big improvement on the last one in the series. I was thinking of giving up they had become so boring. Glad I continued. On to read the next in the hope the good storylines continue. Excellent narration as always. One of the best narrators on Audible. She makes the books which are written rather poetically at times.

Brilliant!

Another great book in Mary Jane staples (Tim's) series.
I feel so sad for Felicity, but
her and Tim together make a
lovely couple, Tim is so funny!
Thanks very much for the Adams family series. I wish you would carry on and don't stop at
29. After all it is an odd number.
Also Annie old girl, have you been practicing your narration?
I t is tremendously good, and you can do practically every voice and accent. Well done,
spiffing old duck.

Best so far

I have listened to all of the Adams family books so far and enjoyed this one the most of all. Annie's narration is perfect and the WW2 detail fascinating. 👌

Another brilliant book

What happened half way through Annie's voice seemed to have changed. It was when David was talking & Chinese lady certainly didn't even sound like her.
