A disappointment

Would you try another book written by Peter Robinson or narrated by Simon Slater?

I enjoyed Simon Slater's reading, but was unsatisifed by the plot line and conclusion. Peter Robinson's writing has been so much better. I won't give up on him though.

Justice for one but not for all

I enjoyed the narrative and would recommend. I have read many Banks novels and look for each new one. I find the writing excellent. The story was interesting and had many twists and turns. I enjoy the way Banks interacts with his team and superiors in the Police and how he moves the case forward. I will not reveal the plot so unless you have finished the book the following will probably not make sense. I understand how Banks solved the mystery and why to save the innocence of one he did not reveal the guilt of another. However that does not sit well with me and in the end as at the beginning I feel Banks is another person to add to the list of those who have totally denied any justice to Mr Miller.
Would recommend the book to followers of Banks. I did enjoy it but could not reconcile with the unfairness of the ending to the original victim Mr Miller Im afraid.

Disappointing

This started off pretty well and I was relieved as I have not listened to an Inspector Banks novel since the appalling 'Bad Boy'. I was pleased to hear the return of Banks and his team, and the plot - the murder of a college lecturer- sounded promising. Although, as with all Robinson's work, the quality of the writing is good, the narration is fairly monotonous and the plot moves far too slowly. As I wasn't gripped by it this became a very disjointed, confused listen. I really wanted to enjoy the work of one of my once favourite crime writers but unfortunately this does not live up to expectations or the pre 'Bad Boy' Robinson novels.

Slow satisfying book.

I’m quite new to Peter Robinson’s books, but second one in I am totally enjoying them.
There is drama, and suspense, but thoughtfully written. A lot of crime related books are dark, scary, fast and sometimes rely on bad language and gore. And sometimes I enjoy books like that. But Robinson’s books are much more. Generally slower paced- with characters that I can relate to and have lots of depth in the stories.
The narrator is very well matched to this style of writing- nothing rushed- but a great pace of story that keeps you interested. I shall look for my next Robinson book asap!

Think I slept through this time

I think I listened to Radio three through the 1980s so miss most of the musical references that are such a part of this book - even more than in the other DI Banks books.
Pity as I am sure there is a lot of relevance to them.

Different from the other Banks stories

This was an interesting enough story, with a glimpse to the past going back to the early 70s. What was different was that Banks team seem to be going on a moral crusade, preaching to the suspects about the consequences of their alleged actions, going mostly on conjecture and so much on solid facts, that went a bit too far in some of the dialogues, which made it very unrealistic and judgemental. I have previously enjoyed listening to back stories, all the theories and speculations but in this book, there was too much of that, almost unnecessary overthinking, over speculating, right till the end and even after the mystery was solved, it was too much, thank you! Only that there is the hint of the beginning of a love story in the end which makes me curious to get the next book, but maybe not straight away.

One of his best

I really enjoyed this book. The story was well paced and complex, and the ending very well done. The reader was excellent and I certainly will look for other things right by him.

A slow burner but gets you in the end!

I found that there was an unusually slow start to this book - to me it seemed to take some time getting off the ground. However, it was worth persevering as the plot eventually drew me in and made me want to get to the end.

Each of Robinson's books adds a little more dimension to the character of Banks and I like the way he manages to weave in compassion for victim - and sometimes 'villain' - in his narrative.

I'm less keen on the narrator as I find his style a little flat an lugubrious, with some frankly off inflections that I'd have thought would be better edited out.

Not His Best

Listened to most Peter Robinson books. This one in my opinion is far to long and drifts off with long passages which have no relevance to the story. Not his best. Better perhaps in abridged form. However the narrator
Is good.
