Summary
Discover a new detective in a tough city.
DI Tom Mariner thinks he's seen it all, but now he faces an investigation which will push him to the limit. Journalist Eddie Barham is found dead in his home. A syringe in his arm and a note by his side reading, "No More". Open and shut case of suicide? Not for DI Mariner.
Hours before, he saw Barham picking up a prostitute in a bar. And then Mariner discovers Barham's younger brother, Jamie, hiding in a cupboard under the stairs. Jamie must have witnessed his brother's death, but his severe autism makes communication almost impossible. Mariner is determined to connect with Jamie and get to the truth.
Is the journalist's death related to his investigation of a local crime kingpin? What other dark secrets does Jamie hold the key to, and can Mariner keep his relationship professional with Barham's attractive sister, Anna? In a nail-biting conclusion, Mariner races against time to prevent more lives being lost.

Engrossing
What a thoroughly entertaining story. This is not the usual predictable crime story of a Detective Inspector hunting a serial killer, instead it covers two main subjects; Autism and the greed of some big pharmaceutical companies. As I have a young granddaughter with Autism I appreciated how the author sympathetically describes the difficulties families face but also the love and dedication shown.
There are many nail-biting sequences so I never found it boring
I really like DI Tom Mariner and enjoyed the descriptions of all the areas in Birmingham his work takes him to, especially Edgbaston where I grew up
The narrator is excellent and manages several different accents very well.
I definitely recommend this book.

Gentle Build up
This book was quite slow paced what seemed like an open and shut overdose unravelled into the discovery of a drug company going to all sorts of lengths to cover up a scandal in the making about a particular drug with side affects that lead to autism. The witness to the so called suicide is the autistic brother of the deceased and he cannot explain things. His deceased brother was his main carer which will now falls to his sister who has a high flying job and how it turns her life around. Di Tom Mariner is on the case. For me the ending made it worthwhile as the pace steps up.

Good intro to the DI Mariner series
I enjoyed this, my first Collett book, and the storyline was really different from standard crime novels.
Narration was decent - I prefer this more measured delivery as opposed to the frantic tension building efforts that some narrators aim for.
I will continue with the next in the series and see how far I get.
Recommended if you are looking for something a bit different.

made for not too pleasant a listen. not a bad book but not a great listen due to the annoying clipping.

Worth a listen
Enjoyed the story, narrator good with accents and it kept me listening to the end. Wouldn’t have complained either if I’d spent a credit in it 👍🏼

Good Storyline
The storyline was suitably interesting. The story had good twists and turns with life's social challenges thrown in. It took me a while to get comfortable with the narration, which I came to enjoy
A very good listen

Okay - passes the time
The plot is good, not at all predictable. The execution is a bit more pedestrian though. That said, it may be the fault of the narration, which lacks nuance and sounds throughout like a local tv reporter delivering a story they are trying to make exciting - though failing. Made it a bit hard-going.
