Cosy and fun
I have listened to quite a few of Meredith Potts books now, and I found they are brilliant for when I'm at work. Easy to listen too and not too complicated if I get distracted with actual work ha. All very fun and safe, if slightly formulaic.
This one was no exception. It wedding season in Treasure Cove, and with their upcoming nuptials Sabrina and David enlist the help of a wedding planner, only for her to be murdered before their first meeting! As they start to investigate another murder takes place, but are they linked, and will this help them come up with a suspect....
Please note, I did receive a free copy of this book in return for an unbiased review.

Enjoyable bit of escapism
First I’ve listened to from this author. The characters are believable and likeable. It’s a short story. But you still have time to want to know more about them.

Women are powerless when it comes to chocolate.
This obviously popular cozy mystery series by Meredith Potts comprises several individual murder mysteries paired with the idea of a particular food. This time it's chocolate cake, in particular chocolate cake with vanilla icing served as a wedding czke. Yes, the main female protagonist, Sabrina Daley, has a very sweet tooth and always has that little space waiting to be filled by pizza or, better yet, doughnuts, or chocolate or ...
Sabrina's friends Kelly and Timothy had a beautiful wedding (and delicious cake). With her own marriage to police officer David approaching, Sabrina decided to employ the services of Kelly's wedding planner. But before she can see her to discuss the event, Valerie, the planner, is dead found stabbed in the back in the chaos of her vandalized home. With nothing from the house taken, it was probably not burglary. But who could have done it, and why? Everybody loved Valerie.
So begins another frustratingly difficult case for nosey sleigh Sabrina and her long suffering policeman fiancee. With multiple cliches (but feelings, we're missing something, and 'Why did her life come to such a tragic end?'), the couple bustle about asking questions - and going for food.
Apart from the constant I said, he said, she said, I asked, which works in the written word but not so well in audio, there is some delicious silly chat between Sabrina's mother and grandparent, but the characters remain more cartoon than three dimensional. And the final resolution is both unexpected and unexplained, as far as motivation is concerned. But it is all good, silly fun and a very quick read.
The narration by Lisa Beacon is mostly good, she captures the impatient, rather empty headed main protagonist pretty well and reads the text with a light hearted delivery, voicing each character individually. But why, on why do all of the other fema!e characters sound so moronic? Never mind, all part of the fun.
My thanks to the rights holder of Chocolate Cake with a Side of Murder, who, at my request, freely gifted me a complimentary copy, via Audiobook Boom. There is a strange Enid Blyton charm to these stories that makes them almost worth reading.
