Summary

Press play on this funny, sexy short story about rival true-crime podcast hosts forced to play nice and work together when, in reality, all they want to do is kill each other.

Emery Thompson hates Calvin Chamberlain. From the way he acts like he’s better than everyone to the way he moves through the world thinking his podcast is the cream of the crop, every little thing about the man gets to him. Even that dashing, oh-so-confident smile. He’d rather be caught dead than be around the man any longer than necessary—or admit that last part out loud.

Calvin Chamberlain hates admitting defeat. It’s hard enough losing sponsors for his historical crime podcast while obnoxious pop-culture ones like Emery’s only gain more, so it’s a particularly cruel twist of fate when a late fan’s request for a collaboration with Emery lands in his lap. He’s in no position to turn down the plea, and with no way out, Calvin reluctantly agrees.

But keeping things purely professional turns out to be a challenge when these two make it to the studio. Their chemistry crackles through their microphones, and soon, their numbers begin to skyrocket. Can these two make a killing off what they once thought was a death sentence—and more importantly, will Calvin and Emery give into the heat of passion?

True crime + romance lovers will adore this

Omg this audiobook was SO GOOD! It was short with a little bit of steam, a lot of humor, fantastic banter, and a lot of great messages. And can we talk about the acting? The audiobook readers and production made everything better. It makes me wish ALL audiobooks were like this one.

If you’re a fan of true crime podcasts, like me, you’re going to love all the tidbits that are included in this.

If you love grumpy sunshine and the irreverent character that brings out another side to a more reserved love interest, you need to read this. It’s perfect for readathons or to read in between longer books.

Thank you so much to Jack Harbon for sending this audiobook for me. I don’t often read review copies because my backlist tbr is sooooo long, but Jack is one of a handful of authors who I will drop everything for. 💖

WHY ISN’T IT LONGER!!!

I need MORE! This is one of the best stories I have listened to EVER! The character development was on point and the chemistry between Calvin and Emery was beautiful. I need more of them and from this author. I am only mad because I don’t have more of these two together.

10/10

Jack Harbon really did a thing with Crimes of Passion. It’s lighthearted, funny, but also has unexpected depth and tenderness. 10/10 would easily and quickly recommend.

Really good narrators!

This was a new author to me, so I went in not knowing what to expect. Turns out, this story was the perfect blend of a sweet romance, sassy characters, and podcasts!

The narration was great and would definitely listen to more from these narrators.

Pleasant listen

The cast recording worked well for this story. Two podcasters with different approaches meet for a collab & sparks fly.

It was a short story, and I thought some of the emotions were a little abrupt. They were also volatile in a way I’d usually want to see evidence of correction for to buy the HEA, but at least the conflict was addressed, apologies were made. I have to take their promise not to push each other’s buttons in future as binding.

Steam: Low: closed door, but for some brief references after the fact. They want to see each other be happy, by the end.

Narration: Lovely. Even volume, good clarity & pacing over multiple voices. Hire them again.

Podcasts

These two rival podcasters have to work together to fulfill a dying wish of a listener. Their styles are different and they actually don't like each other so this should be fun. We listen to find out about their shows true crime, history vs pop culture. It was interesting the different approaches but I wished there was more of the development of their relationship.

Funny Rom Com

This was my first project from Jack and after listening to Crimes of Passion I think I need to read his backlist. Crimes of passion was a laugh out loud romantic comedy. If you enjoy the opposite attracts, rival trope then Crimes of Passion fits the bill. The novella is about two Black true crime podcasters working together at the request of a mutual fan. While working together they both realize that there is more to the other than they realized. The narrators did a great job bringing the characters to life. I look forward to hearing my work from Jack.

Great story

I'm a big fan of how this made me more interested in podcasts. I just need to find one like "A History of Violence"
