About this listen
Sir Hugh Corbett returns in the 18th novel in master historian Paul Doherty's brilliant series.
Summer, 1311, and Sir Hugh Corbett has taken up a life of danger again....
After his recent unveiling of a devious assassin, Sir Hugh Corbett has returned to service as the Keeper of the Secret Seal, begrudgingly admitting that his appetite for adventure has once again been whetted.
Summoned to meet the King to be congratulated on their work together, Corbett and Ranulf learn of the death of Corbett's close friend, Ralph Grandison. Ralph, a leper, has been found dead in a rowing boat, a dagger thrust through his chest. But this murder is not the first of its kind.
Other patients of the hospital in which Ralph was staying have been similarly slaughtered, and it seems as though the lepers, all former knights of the Royal household, are being targeted. The discovery that Ralph was killed by no ordinary weapon but a poison dagger that once belonged with the Crown Jewels before being famously stolen leads Corbett down a complex path where the risk of disease plays out against the backdrop of finding an assassin who will use any means necessary to kill.
As Corbett puts himself in the path of extreme danger, will he survive to see another day?

Sir Hugh is back!
After one short novella to bring Sir Hugh Corbett back into the Chancery, Paul Docherty now gives us the first full novel featuring Sir Hugh Corbett in a while. And what a welcome return it is! With Ranulf at his side Hugh is once again caught up in the intrigues of Philip IV of France and his envoy Amory De Craon. But could this be his last investigation? If certain aforementioned people have their way, it almost certainly will be. Richard Burnip does a sterling job of narrating these books and I look forward to more.

A great listen!
As with all the Paul Doherty historical series, the detail and historical background make this novel and its characters come alive! I can almost see, hear - and smell! - mediaeval London as I listen. Not forgetting these are rattling good stories of murder, conspiracy and treason - with some very human people involved. Cannot wait for my next listen!

voices not convincing <br />
an ok story but too much explanation and repetition of plot along the way. voices were to simplistic and did not add to the story.

A gripping tale of murder and deceit
I had not come across this author before but found this book a cut above most others in this rather over-subscribed genre.

Another Classic Piece of Historic Storytelling
Paul Doherty is a master at mixing history with great storytelling. His books bring the period to life in your imagination with a great cast of characters who have become my firm favourites. I have read all of the Hugh Corbett stories along with some of his others and have thoroughly enjoyed all of them. His knowledge of the subject is both fascinating and also what helps to make his storytelling so intriguing and compelling, Dark Serpent being no exception. Looking forward to working my way through all the others i have yet to read or listen to.
