Summary

Revelations of a life as an Anglican exorcist.

Jason Bray is an Anglican deliverance minister, which means that he works in a field more popularly associated with the Roman Catholic practice of exorcism. He banishes poltergeists and ghosts and explains the church's teachings on demons. It's much more common than you think. Every diocese has at least one deliverance minister.

As portrayed in movies, most famously in the 1973 hit movie The Exorcist, which spawned a whole genre of movies and its own category across streaming platforms, the exorcist is a frightening, sometimes melodramatic figure.

Deliverance Minister Jason Bray, on the other hand, is a warm, sympathetic and humorous character who sees it as his mission to serve the community and help families in distress. In tones closer to Call the Midwife than Blood on Satan's Claw he describes what happens when he is called upon to help. Each true-life adventure is like a detective story. Sometimes he discovers that he is dealing with mental illness. In one case he detects fraud - a family wanting to be moved to a nicer council house!

Jason Bray is the first Anglican deliverance minister to write a book about this ministry for the general listener.

straight-talking and informative

excellent anecdotes, and great delivery. was expecting plenty of horror. has opened my eyes somewhat and turned a complete sceptic into an on the fence believer. a little too much background info but overall great. would recommend to anyone even those of a nervous disposition

Reassured that the vulnerable are treated well

Kind responsible ministry. Occasionally the God aspect was pushed unnecessarily. A throughly good read/listen

Very interesting - listened virtually non stop.

Really enjoyed - interesting insights given from a man who actually does this (not Netflix)!

Thoroughly enjoyed

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and felt that the author (who’s also the narrator) struck a perfect balance between story, pace and tone.

You don’t need to be religious to enjoy this (fwiw I’m an atheist) and I’d recommend it to anyone with an interest in religion, the occult, who wants a differing, honest viewpoint.

I stumbled across this and was glad I did. Great book

Subject interesting

A different narrator would have worked better. When the reader did a female voice usually with a hysterical tone, it set my teeth on edge😁
The content was often tedious and very mundane and I was left thinking how naive the vicar was.

Captivating, hooked from start to finish.

Throughly entertained. Jason Bray places the generally unexplained ‘happenings’ into categories that make sense. You don’t have to be religious to appreciate his work. I just wish I could meet this fascinating guy over a ‘well made’ cup coffee or a glass of wine.

Fascinating insight into a little known ministry of the CofE

As a practicing Catholic I was fascinated by the similarities and differences between my branch of the Church and the authors. It seems we have a lot more in common than I had thought. Yes, there were many places where I thought Catholic interpretation made more sense (for example, he never even considers Purgatory, though he does talk about 'helping souls move on' - which is weird as he seems agnostic on the existence of ghosts and demons! ) but he clearly has a profound faith in Christ, which I found refreshing. Also, he read his book so well. It felt like having a friend around chatting over tea. What a shame he's not written more of this - I'd read or listen to him all day. He actually gave me some fascinating insights and interpretations and wish I had an excuse to study a course with him. Read it, it's great.
