Summary
The Wine of Angels is the first instalment in the Merrily Watkins series from highly acclaimed author Phil Rickman.
The new vicar had never wanted a picture-postcard parish - or a huge and haunted vicarage. Nor had she wanted to walk into a dispute over a controversial play about a 17th-century clergyman accused of witchcraft...a story that certain long-established families would rather remained obscure.
But this is Ledwardine, steeped in cider and secrets...a paradise of cobbled streets and timber-framed houses. And also - as Merrily Watkins and her teenage daughter, Jane, discover - a village where horrific murder is a tradition that spans centuries.
Critic reviews
"Few writers blend the ancient and supernatural with the modern and criminal better than Rickman." (Guardian)
"First rate crime with demons that go bump in the night." (Daily Mail)
"Phil Rickman is one of my all-time favourites." (Diana Gabaldon, international best-selling author)

overly long
It was quite difficult to listen to as the narrator's tone was drear & monotonous.
It was also quite difficult to follow as the 'scenes' would change from one sentence to the next without a breath as if it was a tv script and the listener could see the visual changes.
Overall the book was good but, despite it's length, there were still some of the stories were left unresolved.

a very intriguing story
Rebecca Lacey does a brilliant job of ramping up the mystery and tension. I've read the book previously, but listening to it brings it alive in a whole new way.

As Good the Second Time
I returned to this on audiobook, having read it several years ago. I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it as much a second time, but I found myself binge listening and resenting events that took me away from it. I highly recommend the Merrily Watkins series of books.

Great story
Really enjoyed the story but the narrator nearly put me off! Such a drab voice, glad someone replaced her as I will definitely listen to the next story in the series

Love this book so much.
I've waited for such a long time to get this on audible. I had it on cassettes, but wore them out. I am one very happy listener.
