Summary
The funny, heartbreaking, wonderfully told story of love, family and overwhelming loss which led Emily Dean to find hope and healing in the dog she always wanted.
Growing up with the Deans was a fabulous training ground for many things: ignoring unpaid bills, being the most entertaining guest at dinner, deconstructing poetry. It was never home for the dog Emily craved.
Emily shared the lively chaos with her beloved older sister, Rachael, her rock. Over the years the sisters' bond grew ever closer. As Rachael went on to have the cosy family and treasured dog, Giggle, Emily threw herself into unsettled adventure - dog ownership remaining a distant dream.
Then, tragically, Rachael is diagnosed with cancer. In just three devastating years Emily loses not only her sister but both her parents as well.
This is the funny, heartbreaking, wonderfully told story of how Emily discovers that it is possible to overcome the worst that life can throw at you, that it's never too late to make peace with your past and that the right time is only ever now, as she finally starts again with her very own dog - the adorable shih-tzu named Raymond.

Great listen
I loved this heart felt book from Emily.
I've been listening to her co-host with Frank for years, she is 'sunny' and funny, which the book reflects but also reveals her vulnerable side

Emily <3
After being a fan of the Frank Skinner show on Absolute radio for years, I was interested to know more about Emily than she lets on in the show. This book was a great listen, hilarious and heartbreaking. Well done Em! xoxo

the dog has literally no place in the story... it's just dogs sell and I am the fool who fell for it ...

The lady behind the voice
I first came across Miss Dean while listening to Frank Skinner podcast. First impressions were not great but over time I started to hear the real person behind the self important facade. Emily seemed to soften. After listening to her book I have to congratulate her on a well written, witty and honest biography. I won’t spoil the story by giving anything away but well done Emily. I’m looking forward to your future ramblings. With Frank and hopefully in your next novel.

Lovelyyyy
Big fan of Emily Dean. I could listen to her all day long. I too have suffered bereavement and I too have got a dog. I have no intentions of having children. Emily's way of life is an inspiration. We are the new 'dog family'.

An enjoyable listen
Many, many people have suggested this would be a great listen for the recently bereaved. They couldn't be more wrong! I don't feel this book can be touted as a 'self-help' book. As a personal memoir, it's lovely. A heartfelt and heartbreaking account of how Ms Dean suddenly found herself bereft of family at a ridiculously young age and how awful that must have been for her. I understand she now podcasts about her walks with her dog and it gives me enormous pleasure to know her personal method of coming to terms with her grief has been so successful. A relatively easy listen, although there are a few tough moments that had me on the verge of tears. Overall, enjoyable and engaging.

honestly never EVER had a book that filled with funny eccentric images and a childhood, beautiful bonds and funny stories and minute and then have me balling my eyes out the next! And all this on my commute to work. absolutely brilliant and I'm recommending it to everyone I know. Thank you

Well done Emily.
Beautifully written, funny, soulful and real. I’m looking forward to the movie staring Meryl Streep as your Mother, Brendan Gleeson your Father, Shirley MacLaine your Grandmother and Kristen Wiig as you. I don’t want to spoil the movie by announcing the rest of the cast...Can’t wait for the sequel!

This book is wonderful in so many ways.
Having lost my dear sister to Ovarian cancer I really needed to hear stories from others who had loved and lost in a similar way. Emily Dean writes beautifully. She is witty, intelligent, honest, reflective and has written a book everyone should read.
