Summary

The hugely anticipated brand-new Rivers of London novel....

Peter Grant is facing fatherhood and an uncertain future with equal amounts of panic and enthusiasm. Rather than sit around, he takes a job with émigré Silicon Valley tech genius Terrence Skinner's brand-new London start-up - the Serious Cybernetics Company.

Drawn into the orbit of Old Street's famous 'silicon roundabout', Peter must learn how to blend in with people who are both civilians and geekier than he is. Compared to his last job, Peter thinks it should be a doddle. But magic is not finished with Mama Grant's favourite son.

Because Terrence Skinner has a secret hidden in the bowels of the SCC. A technology that stretches back to Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage and forward to the future of artificial intelligence. A secret that is just as magical as it technological - and just as dangerous.

decidedly disappointing

I have all the River series and from the first I have been delighted by The Nightingale and Peter Grant. However False Value has left me in a bit of a quandry. The story seemed slow and forced - like what do we do with these characters now we have got this far. Peter Grant comes across as a bit of a dick and what has happened to Beverley? From being a feisty independent young woman she has turned into a caracature of herself. I cannot believe that she would discuss her and Peters sex live with virtual strangers and chidren to boot. Very lttle intrigue and even less supernatural content. Where are all the other Rivers - wheres Fleet, Tyburn even Mama Thames. Whats happened to Lesley? The Nightingale is barely only glimpsed as if he is of little importance now.
Taken out of the Folly Peter is just a bloke who can do stuff and not very interesting stuff at that. I know characters have to move forward but it seems Peter Grant has just stepped sideways and not very far! As always the narration is spot on but to be honest I would expect nothing less. I will listen again as I usually do cos there is often such a lot you miss first time round but I am decidely disappointed.

Another brilliant adventure

Really enjoyed everything about the book. Highly recommend. Kobna did another great job with the ensemble of characters!

Good but not his best

The story definitely got a lot better, but not as good as Rivers of London or Lies Sleeping which are the best for me. There are so many new characters it can become a bit confusing. I did however love the fact that a lot of the story revolves around Medway which is where I'm from and so was able for the first time to recognise all of the places. Points lost however for Kobna's pronunciation of Twydall

As fabulous as ever

I love this series and I love even more how Ben Aaronovitch and Kobna Holdbrook-Smth now work together so seamlessly (listen to the fabulous interview at the end of the book).

In this book we mostly focus on Peter and his work and home life and I must say that I have enjoyed the switch back to that after all the mess with Martin Chorley et al in the last few books.

Beverley is pregnant and Peter has a new job so there's absolutely no chance that things are quiet in the Grant household.

I pre-ordered this because I knew I would love it. I wasn't disappointed!

Best book series

To be a serie of books and this is the 8th one. It holds a standard through all of them and Kobna Holbrook Smith is amazing at reading them. Love the interview in the end of the book. Always wonderful to hear Ben and Kobna talk about this books.

Always a great listen

I love the whole series, and it’s great to visit old characters and meet new ones. The narration brings the story to life and without fail I want to complete the book in one sitting.
Great story, excellent narration, totally recommend to anyone who likes a mixture of reality and magic

I'm hooked on audio books

This is the first audio book I've ever listened to, apart from a few minutes' excerpt of another author, which I stopped because I hated the voice of the main character. But Kobna - my god, he's good! I have read all the other books in the series in paperback, and I love them, but I enjoyed this one with all Kobna's voices (upwards of 30 per book he says) so much that I think I will go back to the start and listen to the whole series on Audible. Plot-wise I marginally prefer one or two of the earlier books, but Ben's writing is never lacking in pleasure. Plus, I loved the music here.

Loved This Book!

I didn’t mind the skipping between months, although I did need a couple of goes at the beginnings of some chapters. This really felt like a return to form for me- plenty of Peter, plenty of Nightingale. Just great!
