fields of NOPE not going in there

So today's review was a new experience for me. I've never really reviewed an Audiobook before, so this was an exciting opportunity for me. No dear friends, I didn't have a Cadbury muffin this time, as the buggers were out of stock. Still, I powered on and listened as Justin Mills set the mood. We are introduced to two brothers, Mikey and Ryan. You get the instant rapport between the two characters as the story goes into the background of their past and present. Bentan fields is a spooky crop field I have no desire to visit if it exists. The atmosphere is instant, and the start-up music was very Nightmare on Elm Street esk.

The story centres around Ryan taking Mikey to meet his friends at a mysterious field in their hometown to play a late-night game of tag that goes wrong. The friends are braver than I am, though to be honest, Matt's mom's ass gets a lot of stick. Poor Matt's mom. I love that Corey, Steve and Matt are all so accepting of Ryan's little brother Mikey and the age gap doesn't seem to bother any of them. The fact that Mikey dreams about something coming already sets the mood that you are not going to like what's going to happen. Plus, I had already grown pretty attached to Mikey at this point. The description of the creatures was intense and detailed, and I could visualise them practically standing in front of me. Though, in all honesty, I give Ryan credit for sticking around so long to take in the details. I'd be like Nope and sprinting for the nearest exit out of there. Corey was probably one of my favourites character-wise. His humour and demeanour made him instantly like him. Plus, he was the only kid wise enough to bring protection, even if it was to show off. Mr Stabby was sharp thinking (I warned you about my puns), mainly because I kept thinking of Mr Pointy on my shelf.

Also, Nick didn't skimp on detail when it came to the gory stuff, so if you like raw death scenes, you'll love listening to this. Flashlight tag does sound a lot of fun, but I wonder how it would fare in a haunted house scenario. That being said, I do feel like I wanted more detail in regards to the beast's origins; why were they there? Why this town in Michigan? Did they fancy checking out the five great lakes? I got to know! I also would like to hear about the aftermath and if the creatures returned at any point. So I would love to listen to a follow up on where the story went from there.
More sound effects would have been a nice touch because the walkie talkie effect added depth. Maybe hearing more natural sound effects like the wind going through the field as they hid or the hulking footsteps coming closer.

Nick is a talented writer, and with all the obstacles he faced in his life I, can't help but admire him. I won't give too much away as I don't want to spoil the ending for you, but the story is one of suspense and horror as I held my breath with Ryan multiple times. You can tell Justin was having fun with the story, changing his voice and attitude numerous times to match the scene. He also did a pretty impressive monster roar, which would make metal singers jealous. I have also added the term ‘Holy sweet sauce’ to my vocabulary as that made me chuckle, and I believe my niece will love that expression. So critters, if you want something that has kids trying to survive, hulking fantastic beasties in it. Remember, guys, if you see something inhuman in front of you, leg it.
