About this listen

The brilliant, heart-warming debut novel from the Sunday Times best-selling author of Dummy and Man vs Toddler

Frank is a miserable old curmudgeon. An agoraphobic recluse and widower whose only company is the 'ghost' of his wife, Marcie. He is estranged from friends and family and is entirely cut off from the rest of the world.

That is until he meets Red.

Red is six years old. He's a funny, imaginative, and kind little boy who - following the separation of his parents - moves in next door. Red is fascinated by his new neighbour and seemingly oblivious to Frank's grumpy demeanour and strange ways.

What on Earth will come of this unlikely friendship? Only time will tell...

Every annoying kid you’ve ever known and loved

Goodness me. This could have easily been just a good story. But instead Matt decided to make it heartfelt and funny so that you find yourself down aisle three in Asda thinking “oh remember when Red said that” and having a little chuckle to yourself. Then trying to explain to your husband about the pretend kid that said a funny thing that you’re still laughing about and then he’s asking me if the pretend kid is with us now……..it was a whole thing. Anyway. Fab book enjoy

Recommend For Light Reading

Loved this. Nice story. Not taxing so light relief. Beautifully read. You know what's going to happen but it's not designed to be an edge of your seat thriller. It's just a lovely read/listen. I give it 👂👂👂👂 👂

A hearty story that will make you laugh and cry.

Red doesn’t know how to shut up, and Frank has forgotten how to speak. So when they are thrown together- what could possibly go wrong?
Please sit back and enjoy this profoundly moving look at why we need children in this god-forsaken world we live in.

Wonderful storytelling

I absolutely loved this book. A beautiful story that draws you in and makes you fall in love with the characters. This needs to be made into a TV adaptation. Will be a wonderful watch for families

Fantastic novel and fabulous audiobook

I loved every second of this audiobook. I’m sure I would have loved reading this novel but the audiobook narrator was fabulous and added even more to this beautiful story. I laughed out loud so many times and didn’t want the story to end! Hoping for a frank and red sequel! Awesome debut!

Heartwarming

Lovely story, well narrated. Tugged at the heart strings but also made me laugh out loud. Listened to it too quickly and wish it was longer.

A fun and beautiful heartfelt story

I really loved this. Listened to it in two days. It's a familiar story but one that has real depth of character and a lot of humour. Would highly recommend.
