Summary

The brilliant, heart-warming debut novel from the Sunday Times best-selling author of Dummy and Man vs Toddler

Frank is a miserable old curmudgeon. An agoraphobic recluse and widower whose only company is the 'ghost' of his wife, Marcie. He is estranged from friends and family and is entirely cut off from the rest of the world.

That is until he meets Red.

Red is six years old. He's a funny, imaginative, and kind little boy who - following the separation of his parents - moves in next door. Red is fascinated by his new neighbour and seemingly oblivious to Frank's grumpy demeanour and strange ways.

What on Earth will come of this unlikely friendship? Only time will tell...

Every annoying kid you’ve ever known and loved

Goodness me. This could have easily been just a good story. But instead Matt decided to make it heartfelt and funny so that you find yourself down aisle three in Asda thinking “oh remember when Red said that” and having a little chuckle to yourself. Then trying to explain to your husband about the pretend kid that said a funny thing that you’re still laughing about and then he’s asking me if the pretend kid is with us now……..it was a whole thing. Anyway. Fab book enjoy

Recommend For Light Reading

Loved this. Nice story. Not taxing so light relief. Beautifully read. You know what's going to happen but it's not designed to be an edge of your seat thriller. It's just a lovely read/listen. I give it 👂👂👂👂 👂

One for the generations

Heartwarming poigniant. Loved the subtle humour throughout the story and how it was interpreted differently by the two lead characters. As adults, we could all learm something from seeing the world through a childs eye, not least that you can 'teach an old dog new tricks'.

Great narrator

A moving story, with funny and recognisable moments. The narrator was excellent and made the story even better than it already was

Awooga! Heartwarming, honest and funny

Very well written novel with brilliantly lovable and flawed characters. Lots of laugh out loud moments. The book explores loss and grief and the need for human connection with honesty, thoughtfulness and hope. Loved it. Begging to be adapted for T.V.
