About this listen

Bloomsbury presents Frontline Midwife written and read by Anna Kent.

‘Brutally powerful . . . Totally absorbing’ Independent
‘A gripping, honest and moving account of healthcare work in a war zone’ Henry Marsh, author of Do No Harm

At twenty-six years old, Anna Kent helped a woman deliver her baby in a tropical storm by the light of a headtorch. At age thirty she would be responsible for the female health of 30,000 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. But returning to work for the NHS in the UK, she soon learned that even at home the right to a safe birth was impossible to take for granted.

Frontline Midwife is Kent’s compassionate testament to the critical work of healthcare professionals around the world.

‘An extraordinary, profoundly moving, all-consuming memoir’ Oliver Burkeman, author of Four Thousand Weeks
‘The heart-wrenching tale of one midwife’s quest to help others – and make peace with herself’ Leah Hazard, author of Hard Pushed©2022 Anna Kent and Julia Gregson (P)2022 Bloomsbury Publishing Plc

Much gratitude

A beautifully written and narrated account. Often difficult to hear but often enlightening and heartwarming. Appreciated by this nurse of 42 years who admires and thanks all involved in these experiences both in the past and those going forward.

I enjoyed this book more than I expected!

I enjoyed this book more than I expected! The narration is excellent. I learned a lot about human stengths and weaknesses, about courage and how to help those in need. I strongly recommend this book.

Equal measures of inpiration and harrowing trauma

Only a few people in this world can say they have seen the best and worst of Humanity. Anna Kent is one of them having traveled the world with Médecins Sans Frontières in order to help some of the worlds forgotten peoples.
An amazing story of one womans adventure into some of the most dangerous parts of the world to give help to people the rest of us have forgotton. I sit here in my comfortable chair in my comfortable life having never imagined some of the tragedies the befall some of the poorest people. Anna dived head first into this and tells her story first hand. Harrowing and inspirational in equal measure! A must read/listen.

A definite must read or have read to you

Amazing genuine book that follows the life of Anna Kent from being an NHS nurse to joining the MSF teams in three locations around the world. First location with no Drs and having to deal with maternity and delivering babies made her realise that when she got back to the UK after the first year of service she needed to train as a midwife.
The book keeps you hooked with her, honesty and emotional feelings, frustrations, gratitude for the local women helping
It’s just so hard to stop reading/listening to. Would make a truly heart wrenching film or tv series
Thankyou Anna Kent for sharing

An outstanding read

This heartwrenching true story narrated by the author had me is laughter and tears.

It is well written and the narration has all emotions of the written words. It make you realise how much we have in this country we complain so much about.

It is a heartwarming book which I would highly recommend. The author is Frank and honest, it is a life story well told.

Amazing true life story of life and death

This book just shows you what is going on in the world and without people like this lady there wouldn’t be people there to help them in their hour of need. It shows what the aid workers suffer not only while they are out there helping women in less than clean situations with the threat of violence and war all around but mentally when their mission is over and they have to face what they have had to do during their tour.
I was skeptic about getting this book after some of the reviews but this will make you laugh and cry the reader is amazing with getting the true feeling of the moment across to us listeners. I would definitely recommend listening to this book but I do warn that it’s very graphic in places where medical procedures are extremely graphic but it’s what’s happening day in and day out in these camps. Definitely not for the faint hearted.

A life-changing listen.

This was a very well read story of so many lives. She holds the space for so many, telling of the terrifying circumstances so many women find themselves in. I am grateful to have listened to this. Anna's journey describing the world around her and her thoughts and feelings at different points of her life are sensibly told and she has a tenderness and honesty in her approach to life that I found comforting. Brilliant book. Thank you.
