Summary

Sarah Forsyth has spent most of her life in fear. After overcoming the hurt and heartbreak of a horrific childhood, Sarah managed to build a new life for herself as a nursery nurse.

Then, one day, she spotted a newspaper advert for a job in a crèche in Amsterdam. Excited by the prospect of a fresh start abroad, she eagerly signed up. But within minutes of stepping off the plane in Amsterdam her life began to fall apart....

There was no crèche and no job. That night, at just 19 years of age, her life - her real life, her life as Sarah Forsyth - ended. Fed cocaine and cannabis, and forced at gunpoint to work as a prostitute in the Red Light District of Amsterdam: Sarah was a victim of sex trafficking.

Sarah Forsyth is a survivor. This is her heartbreaking story.

Gripping, and shaming

42 years as a cop or a Police Crime Commissioner didn't prepare me for this book, or its content....it takes you to the gutter and keeps you there...I learnt a lot. Excellently told, strongly recommended, but only if you have a strong stomach!

A life an opnion changing read

A heart wrenching story about a situation I was totally ignorant of.
Told with pace and clarity it leads you through a life and situation that one finds unnbelievable in this day and age. You will not put this listen down. It doesn't titilate or bring you detail......it beings you sadness and a feeling of loss.
Life changing read? - why not? I dare you to read / listen and not feel ashamed of the curtain that gets lifted on the envorinment we use for stagg parties and "innocent" jolly japes. I was questioning my whole attitude to those whove been and to thoae that will follow.
Whatever I thought before.......I can no longer think this for the future.
Read it .

Everyone should read this book

This is one of the most harrowing and deeply shocking books I have ever read, Sarah forsyth tells her story and forces open the eyes of the ignorance that is the forced sex trade. The narrator made me feel like I was there with her, and as a victim of sever abuse myself I felt all of Sarah's pain. this book gave me hope that I too can survive my trauma just like she has.Brilliant

What a terrible life

A very sad story, but a good listen.
They say what ever doesn't kill you makes you stronger, but one person shouldn't have to suffer so much to learn this lesson.

Something Is Off Here

The book starts well, Sarah clearly had a troubled childhood, but as the tale takes us to Amsterdam, things don't add up. Is this because names and details have been changed? Described as a "notorious British criminal," where is John Reece's notoriety? I can understand that details of his prosecution in the late 90s might not exist online, but what of him since? Where is he now? The only mentions of John Reece anywhere seem to be in connection with this book.

Sarah's escape is also slightly odd. Throughout her time in the Red Light District she could have run from her booth, there's obviously a door that opens on to a busy street where she could have tried to get help from passing British tourists, even if she didn't trust the police. She only eventually runs when she's in an unfamiliar area where her only hope is to go to the police she doesn't trust.

Then there's the criminals feeding murdered girls to the dogs? And Sarah's family making no attempt to meaningfully contact her. I can't believe her mum would have accepted those calls from a bar where it was too loud to talk when Sarah was away travelling at just 19.

I'm not saying this story is a lie, but given Sarah's mental state under the influence of lots of drugs, I don't think things happened how she remembered them. Things like murders and human dog food are probably a combination of paranoia and misremembering real events, such a video which showed staged murders.

Difficult topic but eye-opening account

I finished listening to this in two days, it was that interesting. Definitely kept my attention. Depressing how so much damage can be done to another human being.

Such a sad story

So much pain. It makes you wonder how someone could survive the abuse Sarah suffered both from her father, someone who is supposed to love and protect you to the strangers who treated her as a commodity. Her story is told with clarity and at no point did I feel there was any self pity. I can only admire her strength in being able to share her story with us and hope it helps her during her healing process.
I liked the narrator. Her voice is clear and calm and made the book bearable to listen to.
