Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

To hell with love, this goddess has other plans...

Thousands of years ago, the gods told a lie: how Persephone was a pawn in the politics of other gods. How Hades kidnapped Persephone to be his bride. How her mother, Demeter, was so distraught she caused the Earth to start dying.

The real story is much more interesting.

Persephone wasn't taken to hell: she jumped. There was no way she was going to be married off to some smug god more in love with himself than her.

Now all she has to do is convince the Underworld's annoyingly sexy, arrogant and frankly rude ruler, Hades, to fall in line with her plan. A plan that will shake Mount Olympus to its very core.

But consequences can be deadly, especially when you're already in hell...

Fascinating

Well that was just stunning!! I absolutely loved Persephone’s journey and development, her relationship with Hades and how she finds her strength and power, but refuses to continue the cycle of violence and murder. I absolutely loved the portrayal of Hades as a sensitive and artistic sole, who is thrust into a position of authority he never wanted. Their love is inspiring and heartwarming. I cannot recommend enough!!!

A powerful feminist re-telling

So many versions of this story, written by men, never consider that a woman may have her own thoughts and feelings. No longer a tale of Stockholm syndrome, Bea writes us a tale of a young woman who refuses to take on the role the patriarchy dictates for her. The reader/listener is gently demonstrated to how patriarchy negatively effects all those who aren’t ruling with it.

This is also romance story full of love, longing and active choices.

Jenny Walser narrates women brilliantly but at times loses depth in the male voices, however this never distracts from the story itself.

Best Hades/Persephone romantasy I’ve read

Absolutely loved this book! I may now have to buy the physical copy as a trophy I loved it that much.
The story was so thought out and unexpected. I usually guess what’s going to happen in a book but this one I was completely immersed the whole way through and had no guesses just simply enjoyed listening. I feel like there needs to be a 2nd book to explore the way the story ended which I think would be an amazing read but I heard it’s supposedly a stand alone which is very disappointing.
Performance 10/10 although I did listen to the whole thing at 3x speed so be aware it’s quite a slow pace of talking.
10/10 would recommend!

A New Favourite

A thrilling story with just the right amount of love and humour. An interesting look into the roles we play in society wrapped up in an exciting tale of magic, romance and mythology.
Beautifully and evocatively narrated by Jenny Walser. Never was there a dull moment thanks to her understanding of the tone.
Loved it all!

YA Mills & Boons with Greek mythos - meh.

The idea was lovely, the narrator is excellent but it's dreadfully Mills & Boony, and chock-full of clichéd repetition and story contradictions., sometimes within the same paragraph. Persephone turns into a thoroughly disagreeable, whiny, petulant farce.
I got 2/3s of the way through and frankly just couldn't listen anymore.
