Interesting Vampire Hunter story

Despite this being book 2 in a series and me not having read the first one, I found this book to be an accessible and enjoyable entry into the series with references to the first book being fairly self-explanatory.

The book focuses on the adventure and troubles encountered by the new vampire hunter Sam Harlan when he is asked to investigate the disappearance of a young woman by a friend of his former mentor, the main member of the supporting cast is a former sister of the church.

The mechanics of vampires and vampire hunting in this book's world has some interesting little tweaks such as silver being a primary weapon, crosses having the potential to be a more offensive weapon rather than simply a means of defending and the vampire hunter gaining power (and darkness) from the act of killing vampires.

One crucial thing that power gain didn't also include was greatly accelerated healing, that is one of the more usual ways that books often seek to level the playing field with the stronger supernatural creature and the author does a good job of conveying how much the hero was getting steadily more worn down and battered over the course of this book.

I thought that in general the narrator did a pretty good job with this book, but he mainly did best with the main two characters, the various supporting cast were clearly voiced rather than being given fully distinctive voices.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and will definitely look out for subsequent books in the series as well.
