Summary

After an explosive case that forced Tony Hill and Carol Jordan to reassess everything they thought they knew about right and wrong, both are dealing with the fallout in their own separate ways. While Tony must pay the price for his actions, Carol is conducting investigations into suspected miscarriages of justice. But when a shocking discovery is made on a construction site, and skeletal remains are found to belong to a killer who is supposedly alive and in prison, suddenly Tony and Carol are brought into each other's orbit once again....

Awful narration

The story, characters and plot is really good, but it's let down woefully by the narration. Accents, prounounciations and voices for the different characters could be quite off at times.

Not having listened to the books in series, this storey referred back to something that happened before quite frequently, and although didn't detract from this story, was intriguing. Clearly carol is now no longer innthe police and Tony is doing time, so it's going to be interesting how the stories develop from here...

Awful! Thank goodness it’s over

Good storylines throughout the series but (and I blame myself for sticking with it) the narration is the worst I’ve ever heard. If you can get past ‘patterrrn’ and ‘moderrrn’ and ‘didgitull’ then you’re doing well. It’s almost as if it’s read by a newsreader! Totally non-conversational, making for a stilted, unnatural feeling throughout. Female voices: plain odd, and all the characters, even the teenagers, seem like they’re in the same age range: well over 65. I’m willing to bet the narrator has never spoken any contemporary vernacular in his entire life before reading this somewhat outdated series. Not Val’s fault obvs. I mostly enjoyed shouting out and laughing incredulously through the entire series. More fool me, but once I’m in, I’m in. Sorry Saul. You’re probably a lovely bloke.

End of the line?

A weak story and a Mills & Boon ending to the Tony and Carol saga. It feels as if Val McDermid has come to the end of the line for this pair of characters.

A lot of research was done for this book.

Also a great amount of preparation was put in thinking about this completed plot. A little drawn out but worth a read.

Terrible narrator

I can believe I fell for it again I love the author but the narrator is awful! It’s like have Godfrey off Dad’s army read a gritty crime novel. Also agree there were a few unnecessary plots.

I feel disapointed

I was looking forward to this one, having listened to all the previous Hill/Jordan books. But I am left with the feeling that I have been listening to a bunch of short stories with no real substance. I guess the series has come to an end.

stand alone read

For some reason I bought this book not realising it was the latest in what is long series. I vaguely remember some TV adaptations of the earlier books so had dome images in my minds eye of the lead characters. Despite not being in anyway familiar with the events that lead up to the situation our protagonists are in at the start of this book, I found I was still able to easily get into it all.
I enjoyed this book much more than I had anticipated and found it the audio equivalent of a page turner.

Saul Reichlin is eminently listenable-to!

The story was pacey and some interesting twists. most enjoyed the narration - I could listen to anything in Sail Reichlin's avuncular tones!

The last chapter

I have now read all of Val’s books and enjoyed this last one as much as I enjoyed the first one. Thank you Val
