About this listen
Being given yet another pointless 'man manual' that told him 50 ways to tie a bow tie in under 30 seconds made James May certain there was a need for another kind of book. This book, in fact. He reckons there are nine vital things that a chap should be able to do.
Not stuff you can download from the Internet, but really important things. You never know when you might need to land an A330 Airbus, or deliver twins. And there may well be a moment when being able to play a bit of classical music on the piano is absolutely crucial to your success with women. So read, learn, and be prepared - you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.

Apart from passing time, I’ve found it very entertaining and educational. James please do more audio books.

five stars isn't enough
Pure genius from the most thoughtful amateur mechanic and all round top bloke... IN THE WORLD!
Practical advice for those rare moments I'm life where those not reading this book will be standing around like an extra on 'The Poseidon Adventure' before they get a steam pipe tumbling on their head as you calmly save the day.
A must read/ listen.

Captain Slow teaching us all we need to know.
I listened to the chapter on landing the A330 Airbus on an A320 Airbus hoping the planes were similar enough in case my new skills were required.
Only problem with the book - eating your mate (I fast forwarded the last 1/2 of that chapter). Otherwise - good reading!

interesting. funny and rather odd
I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting to get from this book, which is exactly what I got! I didn't think it was going to be a comprehensive manual on landing a plane, even though it's known that James May is a pilot. It, as far as I can tell, was a funny, quirky, slightly disturbing look at the want to be alpha male and the fantasies of being the center of attention.

Crap.
Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time with this, unless you enjoy useless reading.

A bit grim in places
The Airbus chapter was great, the bomb disposal one really interesting and the other chapters just odd. It was mentioned at the start that they were scenarios not covered in any other survival handbook, and I suspect there's a good reason for that.
James May's delivery is brilliant and engaging but I found some of the content quite grim and other bits seemed in poor taste, for example flippancy about concentration camps and details on how to skin and butcher a mate. None of it is meant to be taken seriously, it's clearly just meant to be a bit of fun but the topics covered weren't for me. The chapters cover, how to land an Airbus, how to invade the Isle of Wight, how to escape from Butlins, how to disarm a WW2 bomb, how to play a piano concerto, challenging someone to a dual and cannibalism (not in that order).
