Brilliant all-encompassing look at building wealth

Andrew Craig's book is the perfect antidote to most of the overly simplistic (but highly rated) "level-1" books which dominate the personal finance space. It's clear that the author has a keen interest in not just personal finance, but economics and is sympathetic to the principles of the Austrian school (even if he does quote JM Keynes).

This book teaches the reader how to understand the large macroeconomic forces at work, the workings of the monetary system, the implications of these trends, and then how to assess fair value of ALL the major asset classes, not just the common ones which most other books seem to overly focus on.

The core theme of this book is that Personal Finance does not just happen in a vaccum. Nothing works well all of the time. No single asset is "the best" investment. There is a time and a place for everything, and the more you increase your understanding of the world the more you can make use of the different options available to you.

I have read many personal finance/investing/FI books and for this this book is the best entry point to understanding what is really going on in the world and how to position yourself accordingly.

(Rich Dad, Poor Dad + Richest man in Babylon)×2019

if you've read the above mentioned books, you need to read this book too.

in a similar vein other investment books, yet with very practical implications and, in places, clear instructions on how make your money work for you.

Andrew Craig's narration is smooth and clear as well, I got used to his voice very quickly and didn't tire of hearing him at all.

I'm recommending this book to several of my investment friends and I think that it can really open up a new view to investment and portfolio diversification.

Good Job.

Best “how to get started investing” book on the market for UK investors.

I’ve read nearly every book on personal finance and investing and this is definitely the best one to start with if you are from the UK as most are geared towards US investing.

Mixed—bright spots with some strange diatribes for starters.

It is good in some ways for those starting from scratch. There’s some sound, high-level advice. But also odd emphasis for beginners. The scope and focus is lumpy—zooming between fine practicalities and high-level political economy tangents.

In the end, it’s OK—but you’re better served with investment classics that deliver more value. Where this might deliver is for the UK-specific audience; there is wisdom there specifically.

Excellent advice in what to avoid and why (crypto), the importance of compounding (yes), and diversification (absolutely). Solid stuff. I like that he was very practical in these spaces.

But there are strange diatribes on inflation and odd views of government debt. With equivalencies I always have to teach out of my intro macroeconomic students (government debt is very, very different than personal debt). This was meandering, and seemed lateral to core advice. And not erudite.

The bullishness on gold seemed a bit weird, but it’s fair to have some small share can be allocated to it. The emphasis on this seemed a bit at odds with the advice from the oracles (and commodity pros!) he leans on.

I think there are far better books for starting investors. Many in the Little Book series on investing are sharper.

Full disclosure. I’m a professor of economics and my speciality is in economic history.
