About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
Bel Kumar wakes up in hospital surprised and confused.
Surprised to be told she had a near-fatal accident outside work. And confused as to why her ex-boyfriend is by her bedside.
Bel's HR record still lists her ex as her next of kin, but she can't think of a less appropriate person to nurse her back to health.
But who can she turn to in a crisis? Over-invested parents? A sister whose life has turned out perfectly? Friends she exchanges dating woes with over cocktails?
If this experience has taught Bel anything, it's that she should reconnect with the most important people from her past. But that's going to be easier said than done because Bel has never been good at asking for help.
And she's doing just fine on her own.... Isn't she?

So good!!
Such an engaging storyline with relatable characters. Realistic, funny, human - I wanted to know more and more. I’m sad it’s finished!

Loved it
Couldn't wait to see where the story was going. The writer's observation of detail added a lot of depth and it was read in an easy to listen style. Perfect for a few hot days listening in London!

Warm, cathartic, captivating
Poorna Bell captures the precious warmth of friendship and family so well. She writes characters who are strong, well rounded, flawed, funny, and delightfully human. I love that she always tackles the tough stuff, but with empathy and humour. Reading her books feels like having a long chat with a good friend who really understands you. She manages to balance heavy topics like cultural identity, discrimination, and trauma, but sets them in a context that makes them approachable. It feels like you’re learning and growing with her characters, rather than being a voyeur in someone else’s life. Reading her books has helped me to understand things about myself better, and I’m immensely grateful for her uniquely witty style.

Warm, funny story dealing with modern themes
With characters you’ll enjoy spending time with and a relatable, if flawed, heroine, this novel is about what happens when an accident makes Bel Kumar re-evaluate her life and relationships. Pacy with a witty turn of phrase, the story is beautifully narrated by comedian Sukh Ojla.

Surprisingly enjoyable!
Really enjoyed this. An unexpected surprise of a book, beginning with an unusual premise, but unfurling into an exploration of family relationships and friendship. The only improvement could be if the author had narrated it herself, but otherwise all good. Hope there's more where this came from!

Inhaled this beautiful story on relationships
A wonderfully written, colourful story that follows one woman on her revaluation that nothing is ever permanent, in life and relationships. You can make big & small efforts to connect with others. An easy read covering family, friendships and relationships that do not have to comply with society’s expectations. Truly freeing!

Good story- narration a little patronising
The storyline is good and I enjoyed listening to this book on the whole. I thought the whole brown woman in white territory dynamics really interesting and cleverly handled. However the narration labours over long description of feelings, which is just unpleasant to listen to. Rather than let the reader infer those feelings, the author explains them in great detail and I felt it was patronising, it’s also poor writing practice. I read the author’s previous non-fiction book about addiction and loved it, I didn’t mind the description of feelings there as they were apt, This in comparison was disappointing.
