Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Get what you want without compromising who you are: the new rules of persuasion to influence others for good.

We're all nice. In fact, we're told we're too nice and we have to change to succeed: 'play the game!'; 'beat them down!'; 'toughen up!'. Do we have to choose between betraying our own values and being left behind without a voice? Absolutely not. We can naturally be persuasive and successful every day without making enemies of ourselves or other people.

Influence is a science, and renowned Yale professor Zoe Chance will help you master it in this fascinating book. Drawing on the latest behavioural research, entertaining real-life stories and the skills she teaches on her sell-out Yale University MBA course, Zoe Chance unpacks what influence is and how we are persuaded before setting out a series of powerful skills you can adopt to master the art of persuasion and influence. Her techniques include the Magic Question, Powerful Listening, the What Would It Take Question and Building Support. She also looks at how to use influence for maximum positive impact in the world - and how to defend yourself against the 'dark arts' of persuasion by other less scrupulous individuals or institutions.

Bold, entertaining and efficacious, this indispensable book is a call to action for all the nice people in the world wanting to practice influence without resorting to manipulation, bullying or corruption to create a brighter more positive future.

So off topic

I am sure Zoe Chance is a lovely woman, with the very best intentions, but this book is sooo bad, so off topic. Not worth if you would like to understand or get tips on how to influence people.

One of the most impactful books I’ve ever read. So many actionable tools to implement immediately to improve your life and those around you.

Great mix of inspirational Big Ideas and practical How Tos

I’d recommend this book for anyone who needs that extra push to have the confidence to set lofty goals, and build the skills to close that pernicious gap between aspirations and capacity to execute— the two main variables that lead us down the path to self-actualization.

Just a summary of other influences books

Literally just a summary of wide practice influences strategies. The last chapters are just extra

Boring, Off-topic tangents

I had high hopes for this book but it’s mostly beating-round-the-bush stories that you’ve likely heard in other self-help or business books. Boring and forgettable.

light but interesting

As some have highlighted, you might not find anything mind blowing and new. But it gives structure to your understanding about influence and validation to do certain things or behave a certain way. I am going to ask slightly more and better questions moving forward, for instance. Simple, and I knew it should be done, but let's say I got influenced to do it more now ;)

Nothing new , usual manipulative advice 👎

Highly average. I was very disappointed because in the 1st chapter the author says she will talk about misuse of manipulative marketing. Not only does she not , some of the advice she gives is highly manipulative.

A fresh approach on the subject of influence

Not just your usual quick-sale tactics learned from crooked salesmen, but rather a much more human book about communicating effectively.
