Not my favourite

I found the characters quite shallow and unlikeable. I thought the narrator did a good job but not sure if her interpretation of the characters matched the author‘s intention. Some of the humour hasn’t aged well, I think, such as the unchallenged fat shaming for example.

Don’t underestimate Marian Keyes

Marian Keyes writes books which are funny and light in places. The contrast, then, when she incorporates serious life experiences into her work - alcoholism, depression, abusive relationships ... to name but a few - packs a punch. But her work is never heavy, or at least not for long. This creates impact, substance, good storylines and humour all rolled into one.
This book is narrated by an author with a great repertoire of accents that allow you to instantly identify the character who is speaking and create a mental image of them too.

This story does not age well

I remember reading this in the early 2000s as a teenager and not really thinking twice about the story, but I couldn’t finish this version. I heartily dislike the main character Lucy and found I just wanted her to stop whinging and grow a backbone. Almost every character in this book is unpleasant, has limited depth, and all the female characters narratives are all surface level gold-digger, dumb yourself down type characters. This was made worse by the awful accents the narrator put on. Personal reflection is that it hasn’t aged well and I couldn’t stomach it.

slow start but improved

I found the beginning of the book quite slow and annoying. It spent too long going on about the fortune tellers prediction and made a bit of a meal of everyone's over the top reaction to it. However, the book definitely improved after the start. Lucy is deeply frustrating and I spent my time despairing of her, but I think we all know a Lucy and the character was very authentic. Overall I really enjoyed my experience of this book.

Narrator Amy McAllister is Horrific

So the story was written back in the early 90s, and we have to give it a pass on some of the less savory aspects as viewed through today’s lens. But as all Marianne Kies novels it is entertaining and generally not terrible. The killer of this audible book is Amy McAllister‘s narration. She is the worst it is horrible! She kills the book with her irritating narration. I don’t know how this got through editing.

Not awful but not far off

The narrator was awful, definitely the worst I’ve ever heard and nearly made me give up. The story a predictable one, not a bad thing I enjoy a light hearted easy read from time to time. The fat shaming was cringeworthy. This is the first Marian Keyes I’ve read and probably the last.

Takes some getting used to

the accents were quite hard to get used to listening and the story is pretty predictable but I still enjoyed listening to it.

Irritating narrator

I really enjoyed the story, although it was a little long, but the narrator's portrayal of Lucy Sullivan was diabolical. I kept wanting to tell her to pronounce her words properly. Such a shame.

Really enjoyed this fast paced rom com

So many reviews were crit8cal of the narration but I thought it was great. The mix of characters and accents was no mean feat. Although the end was so obvious from the start, it was still an enjoyable read
