Summary

Jeff the Game Master is a Level One player...Wait, what?

After the rogue patch did its damage, Jeff and the rest of Infinite World’s players face a new threat: Shelarag, the Mother of Dragons. Well, there was a father; what did you expect? She’s pissed. Someone killed her lover, and now they will pay.

Still tasked with figuring out who or what is responsible for the chaos, Jeff must also figure out what the heck a Manipulator Class is. To help him on this journey, former GMs Torvi and Snapdragon will apply their extensive knowledge of the game to power-level Jeff and attempt to restore normalcy to the game.

Meanwhile, Dak, Jeweliette, Oliver, and the rest of the party find themselves stuck in the next questline to destroy dragon after dragon after dragon...after dragon. Maybe Dan Shaklee should just pull the plug already...

Manipulating Magic is book two of the Jeff the Game Master series. It picks up where the first left off, and his exploits are only half the fun. Experience a unique spin on the LitRPG genre, not just providing the perspective of the players, but also of one of those mystical, magical, all-powerful GMs we all dream of being.

Still Good, but one wish…

I’m a big fan of Castle and Osgood, and adding in Nick is a slam dunk. I also love this stoey. The concept, the world building, and the level of detail are phenomena. One of the biggest shining points is how they do a great job with not only the VR, but the IRL as well. Many LitRPG authors will fail at one or the other when it’s not a “trapped in game” or “aliens took over the world and turned it into a video game”scenario. That being said, it feels like 90% story and 10% action. The elements that make LitRPG great (in my personal opinion) are levels, loot, stats, etc. Is it possible to maybe make it like a 70/30 split? Just a little more action to break up the dialogue would make this a 5 star for me. I’m invested and have no plans to not keep throwing my credits at this series. I’d just love a little more grinding. Maybe a 2-3 chapter dungeon run? Jeff is the most interesting part of this series. I want to see him grow, rather than the few minutes about power leveling, followed by more story, without actually seeing his levels increase.

Worth the credit. Excellent narration. Superb story telling. Love the series.

Really enjoying the story

Rogue AI becomes railroading gamemaster. I imagine this would make DnD horror stories on the forums. On that note, i do like when the book does the small forum chapters. I am really interested in where this story is going and an excited to get to the next book.

Characters: I like them, except the ones i am not supposed to like and those I appropriately am annoyed with. I also like that, despite the title, this has actually turned into assemble cast. Jeff is cool but I really like Dak and his crew. I hope their wayward tank becomes a hero before the series ends.

Narration: This guy does a great job in all the books I have heard him in. His range of voices makes it easy to tell who is talking.

Overall: Would recommend and will get next book.

Enjoyable book...

This book starts up right where Manufacturing Magic left off! Which I love! Although Manufacturing Magic wasn't exactly a cliffhanger it did feel abrupt and I found myself missing the dénouement. So having bk2 beginning at the same spot filled my needs perfectly.
I did enjoy the book as Jeff leveled up, but wished that he could have enjoyed the adventure too... Even another player thought it was necessary to take him to task scolding him, I wish she'd've done it sooner! And of course we're still getting all the other view-points, from the Rogue AI Prince Tom, other players, and tech support. I've got to say I've really enjoyed the forums as it was a way to link to the players, and a nice touch. I always enjoy, finding/recognizing easter-eggs, as I'm not a gamer myself, I figure that I miss most of 'em, but I caught 2 in this book, one mentioning Shirtaloon and the other a game Sky Realms Online, now those were truly laugh out loud moments!
So if you read the first book you'll definitely need this one!
Get the audio version because Nick Podehl nuanced performance is outstanding!
Ohhhh yeah, and did ya get a eyeful of the cover for the next book Mastering Magic? It's the reason why I started reading this series!

Annoying viewpoints and cheap ending

The sheer amount of viewpoints brought what could have been an amazing story down to below average. The viewpoints added nothing to the plot or story half the time, instead they were meant to act as cliffhangers, and did so badly.

Speaking of cliffhangers, this book has no ending. It’s not even a cliffhanger ending, it just ends in the middle of a chapter, showing this author is not experienced and has to resort to a cheap trick to bring readers back.

I like the MC, I could tolerate some of the side characters but we don’t need to know what 5 people are thinking in every scene. I hope the author continues to grow and improve, because this style of writing ruins what could have been a good story.

Pure fun, escapism

Enjoyable LitRPG without the too-often obnoxious elements of sexism, excessive combat action, intense bragging, and so on. It was well-written, nicely plotted, and the characters are interesting. It's great escapism, and I look forward to the third installment. Fun references scattered in the book.

Enjoyable sequel

More laughs and deeper insight into the mystery of the rogue patch made this an enjoyable sequel. Now we’re starting to enjoy the other characters involved in this quest, though Jeff remains my favorite part. Nick does an awesome job as usual. The forums continue to crack me up. Especially AlphaMale.
