About this listen

Late 21st-century Earth is overcrowded, her natural resources dwindling rapidly. World governments and greedy mega corporations are forced to work together toward a solution.

A crew of ten humans are sent to Mars aboard Hyperion I to locate a suitable site and establish the first colony. After a months-long flight to the red planet, just as they are about to descend to the surface, problems arise. A careless accident kills a crew member, damages the ship, forcing the others to launch early. And that's just the beginning of their troubles.

On day one they learn that magic is real, and that the planet, in fact the entire galaxy, is governed by a complicated and merciless System. Their assimilation into the System makes them enemies of the paranoid powers that be on Earth, and they find themselves cut off. No communications with family, no resupply, they're on their own on a mostly dead world.

And nearly every form of life they do encounter is out to kill them.

Join Commander Fletcher and her crew as they struggle to survive a new world with new but familiar rules.

Great new book BUT..

I am a big fav of Dave Willmarth however always worried the new book series he starts will never get finished. He releases the books at a very slow pace as well.

The book is wonderful but like the other two stories won’t mean much if not finished

Great start to a new series

Like his other series, this is not just promising but a great start and I am keenly awaiting the future books in the series.

Starts well.

I'm torn on this one. It starts well, with a good premise and interesting dilemmas for the group to face and overcome. Unfortunately, in the final third of the book, the author changes direction on the survival of the group and the story becomes a more typical example of this author's other works. That's not to say it's bad at all. It is a solid title and has potential in its own right... I do feel for the lost potential though.

There's also the concern that this will be unfinished like the other works from this author.

Near future sci fi Litrpg.

Just wanted to post how much I've enjoyed this book.

Setting: Near future Sci-fi, real world (though 'magic' comes into play in a non-fantasy vibe).

Plot: They were the first people to land on Mars, set to start the first Martian colony, they set down and started to look for water, but when the crew are contaminated by a mysterious crystal and find themselves waking to the system, they find their troubles have only just begun.
Quick note: I particularly like this story as its not just 'they are on the planet and have to fend for themselves' but there is a fair chunk of politics from Earth that results of their contamination.

Why I like it (in brief, with minor spoilers).
Continuing on from my quick note, part of the politics that comes into play is covering up that we are not alone in the solar system a discovery that could shake the world. I thought this was a really nice touch. This leads to some major complications and interesting story parts.
There is a fun mythology behind what is going on, on Mars and why it's occurred.
So much fore-shadowing ^_^.

Overall:
Basically I find it a well written story, its nice to have a near-future sci-fi story that reminds me more of stories that will come out from The Expanse (though it's no where near as political and science heavy as The Expanse). I read/listen to a lot of LitRPG at the moment, so its made a nice change of pace. The environment itself provides its own challenges and that's without the need for the characters to be attacked.
