Summary

Kate Lawler has never been maternal. And yet here she is: mother to Noa, after years of going back and forth about having children at all. This is the story of her journey from parentally undecided to early motherhood, via raging hormones, sleepless nights, emergency hospital trips, mum guilt, unspoken regrets and post-natal depression.

This book is not a parenting manual. It won't tell you what to pack in your hospital bag, or how to get your baby to sleep. It may not help you with feeding or dealing with tantrums. But it will show you that you're not alone - and that it's perfectly possible, and maybe even normal, to love your child with all of your heart while also feeling lost, alone and resentful.

Whether you're an expectant parent, a new parent, firmly in the thick of it or still parentally undecided, this book is for you, as Kate writes honestly and hilariously about the ups and downs of pregnancy, birth and early parenting, as well as the impact of a new baby on relationships, your sense of self and everything in between. It's a book that, with Kate's usual candour and wit, will help mums and dads everywhere feel seen - and completely understood.

Wonderful book by Kate Lawler

I’m not even a parent, and I’m not sure if I want to be, even at the tender age of 33 - I’m a bit like Kate was. I absolutely loved this book/ audio! It’s so refreshing to hear Kate open up and be so candid about her journey to mother hood and motherhood itself. I’d definitely recommend this book!

Open and honest account of motherhood

Love how Kate is so open and honest … talks about taboo subjects that shouldn’t be taboo and should be discussed more often. Thank you for sharing your story xxx

New Nanna to Be 💖💙

Loved this book so much! I’m going to be a new nanna in July, our daughter is having a baby and reading this has reminded me of the struggles I had 32 years ago as a new mum to a 10wk early premature baby - my daughter! How my PND went unnoticed & untreated and how I got ‘better’ by myself after feeling all these things Kate did. I am going to urge my daughter to read / listen to this as part of her preparation for motherhood! Thank you Kate 💝

What a fantastic and so relatable book .

Well done for this honest account of life before children and the truth of becoming a mum and parents . I laughed and actually cried at some points because they hit a raw nerve with me a number of times .
I didn’t want this book to end and I’m probably going to listen to again .
I got engaged at Burg Sq , Brugge too - ha and I thought I’d never get married or become a mum as I was never fussed about other peoples kids - gave me comfort that others feel like this too - but now I wouldn’t change a thing even though I’m as crazy as a box of frogs some days ;)
Kate Lawler your a breath of fresh air - thanks for the read ( well listen ha) x

Had to switch off after first chapter.

The intonation is horrendous. She goes 'up' at the end of every other sentence. Had to stop listening.
