Summary

In his first and only official autobiography, music icon Elton John reveals the truth about his extraordinary life, which is also the subject of the smash-hit film Rocketman. The result is Me - the joyously funny, honest and moving story of the most enduringly successful singer/songwriter of all time.

Read by actor and star of Rocketman, Taron Egerton, with an introduction and epilogue read by Elton John.

Christened Reginald Dwight, he was a shy boy with Buddy Holly glasses who grew up in the London suburb of Pinner and dreamed of becoming a pop star. By the age of 23, he was performing his first gig in America, facing an astonished audience in his bright yellow dungarees, a star-spangled T-shirt and boots with wings. Elton John had arrived and the music world would never be the same again.

His life has been full of drama, from the early rejection of his work with songwriting partner Bernie Taupin to spinning out of control as a chart-topping superstar; from half-heartedly trying to drown himself in his LA swimming pool to disco-dancing with the queen; from friendships with John Lennon, Freddie Mercury and George Michael to setting up his AIDS Foundation. All the while, Elton was hiding a drug addiction that would grip him for more than a decade.

In Me Elton also writes powerfully about getting clean and changing his life, about finding love with David Furnish and becoming a father. In a voice that is warm, humble and open, this is Elton on his music and his relationships, his passions and his mistakes. This is a story that will stay with you, by a living legend.

The real Elton!

Being a massive Elton fan for too many years to count, I have read many biographies. This, at last is Elton telling it as it was , and is, no holds barred! It is truly enlightening, sad, funny, emotional , sometimes a little crude, but overall a wonderful listen. Taron narrates with feeling. Great also to hear Elton do the prologue and epilogue. 10/10

Couldn’t stop listening!

What an interesting and amazing life Sir Elton has had. Found this book both sad and funny and was slightly addicted. Elton’s tone of voice is just perfect.

Honest account

Seemed a warts and all review. I admired his honesty, especially as he has nothing to prove.

Superb

An honest and heartfelt book about an amazing human being. I like Elton John’s music but I wouldn’t really call myself a fan, his life is so mesmerising that I would recommend this book to everyone! Taron’s performance was exceptional. If you’re on the fence please go ahead and give it a listen!

Fantastic Tales

Wonderful audiobook, well read, hilarious, honest, bitchy, down to earth and heartwarming.
Amazing stories from the Beatles to the royal family and everyone in between.
Probably much better than Rod Stewart’s haha

Interesting, fun, and inspiring.

I’ve never been a great fan of the music but this book and the biopic have made me want to listen more.

Well read by Taron Edgerton. He’s particularly good at doing impressions, when Elton has quoted directly from people like the Queen, Rod Stewart, and John Lennon. Nice to have the man himself reading a lengthy section at the end. This ties it up nicely.

Story is great - growing up in Pinner, getting into music, difficult relationships to parents, going to America for the first time etc. etc.

I particularly liked some of the anecdotes, like the one about the queen playfully slapping her nephew in the face, the bizarre first meeting with David Furnish’s parents when Michael Jackson tagged along to dinner, and Gere and Stallone squaring up to each other over Diana. His journey from mad excessive behavior into domestic happiness is an appealing story. This, along with his reflections on the difficulties and changing status of being a gay man might inspire people to have confidence their own difficulties can be overcome.

Great overall. Made me want to listen to more of his music.

Entertaining, witty, moving, thoroughly enjoyable

Absolutely loved reading this. Taaron Egerton narrates so beautifully and even if you aren't a fan of Elton, I think you would really enjoy hearing about his wonderful life.

Loved this

I enjoyed this very much. As an autobiography, this is an honest, candid, frank and often humorous appraisal of one's life. Taron Egerton does a superb job of narrating Elton's book, and I feel it's only appropriate that he did so since he had assumed the lead role in the Rocket Man biopic. I learned loads about this artist who I had previously known for his music alone, and enjoyed it so much that I listened to it a second time. I would recommend it.
