I hadnt realised how bad it was 😔

I truly had no idea how systemic and chronic the misogyny was in our society. I think that's because I've been incredibly lucky being surrounded mostly by men who are respectful of women all my life. Also I naively believed it to be better than it was 18 years ago when I just accepted this kind of treatment as normal while at uni. a real eye opener and deeply concerning

Infuriating, Essential and Potentially Life Saving

All books by Laura Bates are highly informative and thoroughly researched and this was no different. She is very engaging to listen to on Audible. No matter how much you read about and research misogyny, you will learn something from this book… and learn some ways to fight back. Above all, men should read this book.

Prepare to get angry

Excellent follow on to Everyday Sexism

This book came out at the end of February and I had been eagerly awaiting it having read "Everyday Sexism" by Laura Bates on New Year's Eve and been blown away by it.

It's a narration of sorts of her Guardian articles on sexism since she launched the everyday sexism project in 2013. An early review I had read mentioned that it covers a lot of old ground from her earlier books and whilst I have to agree with that assertion, it's hard to see how an updated book on the topic could avoid doing so to some degree.

Laura covers how things have changed, or not in some instances and after reading a selection of articles written over the last 5 years, discussing how the rise of Trump and other high profile scandals like the Harvey Weinstein case have sparked the #metoo and #shouting back movements with great success.

There's still a huge divide betweeen the sexes and women are disadvantaged in nearly every field of employment. The book covers many examples not touched on in her earlier work and Laura seems even more qualified and informed having been much closer to the forefront of the women's rights movement.

What I was pleased to hear was of all the stories of women who felt empowered to report cases of sexism, sexual assault and rape having read stories on the #everydaysexismproject as they realised that thousands of other women had felt that it is not right and had thought "I might not be believed" as well.

It gives me hope that the recent momentum of the #metoomovement will see the start of the end of sexism and this book is another weapon that can help to keep that progress going.

Conflation and confusion.

Laura Bates is generally very good on this subject, but I was both disappointed and irritated by her continuous conflation of sex and gender. They are two very different things and conflating them really doesn't help with clarity. With the rise of gender ideology and its particular impact on women in society, we need to be very clear about what we say.

Another Must-Read from Laura Bates

Another amazing read from Laura Bates. If you know me, I will have tried to push a Laura Bates book on you at some point and so you won't be surprised to hear that I loved this one just as much as the others. I read this on ebook and then re-read it on audiobook because this audiobook is read by the author and so was even more wonderful than reading it on my Kindle.

This is a collection of columns written by the author including some discussion pieces, some advice pieces and some top ten lists. the top ten lists were humours even given the subject that they were concerning. Laura Bates knows how to write about what should be fundamental human rights and them not being granted to specific groups of women or all women and make it engaging and entertaining. I don't know how she does it but I am in awe of her and will read everything that she writes.

In this book, Laura Bates highlights some groups of women that are sometimes passed over in other collections of feminist essays or notes on misogyny and she also highlights programmes that are out there to help women and support the fight against Everyday Sexism that I didn't know about. I love the fact that these are highlighted for me. This collection gets a little more political than her previous books and i applaud her fro including this in her writing, it is a brave thing in our current climate!

Because this is a collection of essays, this is something I will be coming back to and re-reading section of that I find relevant as things come up in my life. I have done this with both of her previous novels and so I will be adding a physical copy to my Kindle copy and my audiobook of this one. If you are interested in reading about gender equality and the fact that everyday sexism still exists...everyday then you need to add this book to your collection and I suggest that you do that now.

Thought Provocing and well written book

Couldn't stop listening to this audio book. I finished it within 3 days! Everyone should read this book, men and women... My husband and I spent hours discussing it, we bought thought it was great. Thank you, Laura Bates, for researching, writing and fighting for feminism!! I have experienced many misogynistic moments, sometimes from people related to me. I stand up to these people every time, and I hope this book will help others to do the same!

So important

It’s like an encyclopaedia of what it’s like to be a woman in Britain. There needs to be a deeper look at what it’s like to be a BAME, disabled and LGBTQ+ but as a basic founding stone of women’s experiences, this is solid and necessary listening. I really hope men will listen to it too.
