About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
You never forget the one that got away. But what if ‘what could have been’ is yet to come?
Daniel was the first boy to make Alison a mix tape.
But that was years ago and Ali hasn’t thought about him in a very long time. Even if she had, she might not have called him ‘the one that got away’; after all, she’d been the one to run.
Then Dan’s name pops up on her phone, with a link to a song from their shared past.
For two blissful minutes, Alison is no longer an adult in Adelaide with temperamental daughters; she is 16 in Sheffield, dancing in her skin-tight jeans. She cannot help but respond in kind.
And so begins a new mix tape.
Ali and Dan exchange songs - some new, some old - across oceans and time zones, across a lifetime of different experiences, until one of them breaks the rules and sends a message that will change everything....
Because what if ‘what could have been’ is yet to come?

Great idea for a novel.
I loved the basic premise, the main characters were my age with very similar music tastes and it started well. Sanderson captures the early era well and writes very evocatively about Australian landscapes, however she overwrites her characters and leaves very little work for the reader to do. They’re either totally awesome or on a pedestal (eg Dan, Ali, Beatrice, Sheila & Dora) or completely negative (eg Caitlin, Michael & Martin) so you know very early on in the novel what the ending is likely to be.
I chose Audible as I thought there’d be more of a nod to the music but there’s none and as listening on a phone you have to stop/start the novel if you want to switch to music.
Sadly the narration was spoilt by the character voices - Dan’s Dad & the boat hippies were particularly awful and really spoilt the story. (The novel is dialogue heavy!)
Overall a great idea for a story, some lovely writing to set scenes, some brilliant song refs and some interesting characters that would have benefitted from more nuanced character development so that we could draw our own conclusions about them.

Hooked from start to finish
Really enjoyed the characters and the music intertwined in this story. Candida really brought them to life. I was pulled through all kinds of emotion and was caught between the urge to pause to listen to the songs mentioned, and to find out what happened next.
Highly recommended for music fans, romance fans - a heart warming listen.

A dire book
Sorry but this starts out promisingly and then dwindles in the worst sort of Miils and Boon thoughtless, badly written rubbish. By the end I was screaming ‘what about the children?’
Brilliantly read though

Odious
A nasty little piece altogether. Some naming of songs. Otherwise not much to commend it. Escapism with a touch of violence, alcoholism, neglect and abuse. But all ends well, for the star crossed lovers at any rate.
