Interesting take

Like many others I chose this book because it was narrated by Stevie Zimmerman. It didn’t disappoint. I’ve listened to (too many probably) many a JSFF & this one stands out as a better one. I highly recommend this book

An emotional roller-coaster of a book

Wow. What a fantastic re-imagining of Pride and Prejudice. Following a twist to the original Hunsford proposal Darcy and Elizabeth fund themselves married *before* Lizzy comes to understand his character.

The Journey to the truth takes a dramatic turn when Darcy overhears part of a conversation not meant for him. Holding true to the statement that his 'good opinion, once lost, is lost forever' there follows an angst filled battle for our favourite couple. Will they have their happily ever after?

Despite having to stop listening several times, being so concerned for Darcy and Lizzy wellbeing, I found this book a thrilling listen. I've read and enjoyed Joana Starnes work before so was prepared to enjoy this too but I wasn't prepared for the heart-pounding, lump in the throat, moistening of eyes experience I got. An dit was wonderful!

Fabulously narrated by Stevie Zimmerman. She drew you in to the story with her delicate characters - nothing jarring when she switched from male to female.

Highly recommend listening to this!

Beautifully written, wonderfully told!

Where does Mr. Bennet's Dutiful Daughter rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This story is fantastic but so sad at the same time. Mr Darcy proposes to Elizabeth when he learns her father is seriously ill and not likely to survive. He protects her and her family whilst declaring himself in love with her. Elizabeth realises she doesn't know him at all and the reader hears all of her conflicting thoughts as her husband praises and insults her - often in the same sentence! Elizabeth has such a difficult time trying to figure out his character. At times he is kind and thoughtful, at other times he is nothing short of awful. As if this is not bad enough, a further misunderstanding occurs in which seems the couple are destined for misery. I felt so sorry for Elizabeth. A real highlight of the story is the stern telling off Darcy receives from Bingley.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I really liked this version of Elizabeth as she tries to be a good wife to such a difficult and complex husband. Colonel Fitzwilliam is briiliant and Mr Bingley is a real hero. This story focuses very much on Darcy and Elizabeth, particularly her inner thoughts which really adds depth to her character. The reader introduced to the reflections of Mrs Reynolds which adds more breadth to the story and was a really nice addition.

What does Stevie Zimmerman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Stevie Zimmerman is clearly a very talented lady! Her speaking voice is lovely to listen to as it is calm and clear with expression in all the right places. All her character voices are distinct and really good. Mr Darcy's voice is slow and considered, the Colonel has a more cheery inflection and Elizabeth sounds constantly confused!! All the voices are in keeping with what we know about the characters and reflect their feelings about each of their circumstances. I felt that Ms Zimmerman really understood the story and the characters and was not simply reading the story.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This is a tale of complex emotions, lots of trouble and difficulties, disappointment and sadness... but it is amazing and really worth the emotional journey Joana Starnes takes the reader on.

There is some fantastic humour from Elizabeth's musings and interactions between the Colonel, Bingley and Darcy. This tale has an unusually long Epilogue told from Mrs Reynolds perspective which was just lovely.

Emotions all over the place

This one, my 4th book by Joana Starnes, was yet another masterpiece. I felt all sorts of emotions during the book. Laughter, disgust, strongest dislike...but nothing could prepare me for the tears that would flow - during chapters 20, 21 & 22. What an emotional rollercoaster - in a positive way.

My favourite bit of the book, was Mr. Collins' appearances. Such a classic, unlikable character. Not wishing to give away any spoikers, so I intend to be careful with words. Mr Collins, the cantankerous, vile parson and Mr Darcy's verbal sparring is nothing short of wonderful. Stevie Zimmerman's narrative skills at their best. She paints such a delightful picture with her voice.

As the book drew to a close I observed that my emotions for Mr Darcy were a mirror of Elizabeth's. Delight, gratefulnes, vexation, longing...
oh what a wonderful book.

A story old as time full of joy and sadness

A sensitive and beautifully written story, all the usual well loved characters from P&P from the pen of one of the best exponents of this genre, Joana Starnes Partnered with the incomparable narrator Miss Zimmerman, for me, makes this story another keeper.

Very intriguing story

I wanted to love this. It’s very well written and engaging and as usual from this narrator the voice over is beautiful. But at times Mr Darcy is so unlikable and Elisabeth so unrecognisable from the character we know that it was really frustrating to listen. Over all though still worth purchasing.
