About this listen

Ann Cleeves Classic Crime - engaging mysteries to savour, beloved characters to meet again

Murder in My Backyard is the second mystery novel in the Inspector Ramsay series by Ann Cleeves, author of the Shetland and Vera Stanhope crime series.

No one in Heppleburn has a bad word to say about Alice Parry . . . but here she is, murdered in her own backyard on a bitter St. David’s Eve.

When detective Stephen Ramsay starts asking questions in the village, a more ambiguous picture begins to emerge. Yes, old Mrs. Parry was loved by everyone, but sometimes her kindness had caused trouble. Yes, her two nephews were devoted to her, but they didn’t really want her interfering in their rather complicated personal lives. Even among her neighbours, Alice Parry’s helpfulness had sometimes misfired; and after her death, tension tight as a clenched fist grips the uneasy village.

Meanwhile, the suspects keep rolling in, and Heppleburn’s friendly neighbourhood killer continues his nasty piece of work . . .

Great read

Having read all the Vera novels and then the Shetland ones, I knew I would enjoy any book by Ann Cleeves. The stories are always interesting and keep you guessing to the end. I'm definitely enjoying not having to read but just listen, with Audible. Inspector Ramsay is very different from Vera and Perez. Another brilliant story from one of my favourite authors.

Okish

Wasn’t what I expected but kept me interested enough to the end and the narrator was good

Great atmosphere and sense of place

The novel had an excellent sense of the atmosphere of a small North East village - tight but suspicious community. On whole good characters and surprising complex relationships. Disappointing ending as most of the significant criminal activity had to be explained. It was integral to the main story.

A cracking book

...with one slight flaw!

The story moves along really well, the construction is effective and the narration outstanding. The only downside is that the one signposted and obvious motive for the initial murder was ignored at the conclusion a weak motive in it's place. So annoying! However, it's a well worth listening too,

Ok

Reasonable story. Narrator good. I missed bits as fell asleep but did not matter as easy to work out what I had missed.

Quite hard to follow

Difficult to understand the ending - why the main culprit had done it. I had to listen to it twice.

Enjoyed the character of Ramsay

Great storytelling, leading us through the maze of mistrust & secrecy. Inspector Ramsay is an interesting character, mysterious & at times uncertain. Narrator did an excellent job. Looking forward to the next in series.

Discriptive pictures

A good listen typical of Anns books, a pleasure to read or listen to. I enjoyed the gentle setting with fast pace action.
