Summary

Mastering magic comes only with the greatest of trials....

Alec began his 18th birthday with the temple monks. By day's end, he discovers he possesses magical abilities.

Except his magic is unique. He doesn't require grimoires and incantations to cast spells. Alec's magic is entirely natural. He can, somehow, absorb the elements from objects and manipulate them according to his will. This power is incredible, but difficult to master. If he's going to learn how to use his natural magic, it'll take the tutelage of Archmage Diamondspear, one of the most adept magic users in the kingdom.

And Alec's training is not without its dangers. His abilities manifest and grow when he is in dire circumstances, and his teachers are not beyond putting Alec in the gravest of situations if it means his powers will increase. He'll battle monsters and creatures from his own world, and even those from other worlds. As he faces unknown dangers, he must learn how to harness natural magic....

Not bad but not special

A nice and harmless fantasy novel. Good for young adults but a little too sterotypey for me. Classic "country backwater kid gets given a legendary item and discovers he has huge potential" story with the typical "impending but unspecified doom" thrown in.

The execution leaves something to be desired

This book has a great premise but needs some serious edits. Additionally, the way the author writes about women is a bit creepy, the main female character is very rarely mentioned without reference to her appearance.

Good title from the plus catalogue

There are few annoying things in the story itself but it is a serviceable coming of age fantasy so far with lots of familiar and comfortable tropes.

I liked this book

But I don't think I like it enough to get the next in the series .
I started missing parts of the story as my mind wondered, and that's not a good sign.
it's got the standard boy grows up poor and suffering, something happens, and he's an overpowered hero, meets a girl, etc .
The bit I find unbelievable (lol) is that as soon as he has some power ,he sorts out the mistreatment for his fellow boys - just like that!

Good story. Relatable characters.

We enjoyed this book. It took a bit to get going but was a different twist on a familiar theme.

It's Ok

Struggling to get into this book. It does have potential though and I will give it a few more chapters to see if it gets better.
