Summary

On compassionate leave following the death of her mother, Detective Constable Constance Fairchild thought renting a cottage near Aberystwyth, Wales, would get her far enough from London to finally relax. But trouble always seems to find Con, and it's not long before she is cooling off in a police station cell after defending herself from two would-be rapists.
In custody, she meets a young Ukrainian woman, Lila, who confides in Con that she's been forced by her manipulative boyfriend into prostitution and running drugs. Fearing for her life, she has run away from him, only to end up in the cells.
Con offers to help, but when her cottage is ransacked and Lila subsequently disappears, she realises she's stumbled into very dangerous company. outstanding
Another masterpiece from James Oswald and brilliantly narrated by Rose Aykroyd. I really honestly keeping everything crossed that this isn't the last that we hear from DC Constance Fairchild or Madame Rose

Loved it
I thoroughly enjoyed the inclusion of myth and the supernatural. Con did irritate me at times and I certainly wouldn’t have bothered to save the life of one of the men who had been intent on rape. Loved the wolfhound.
One of the niggles was the use, I would say misuse, of the word startled. Unless correct forms of English grammar have altered since I was at school, maybe.

Violent Enid Blyton!
Enjoyed this book but the author asks the reader to take a number of “leaps of faith”..the plot is unbelievable at times, but a combination of fast pace and wit still makes it a good listen.
Very good narration also.

Brilliant
I love beyond words the elegant mix of real and surreal that is the unique brand of James Oswald. I truly hope he never ever stops writing. Rose Akroyd is perfect as the voice of Con. Smooth and soft to listen to.

Con Fairchilds adventure just get better
James Oswald has done it again! Superb mix of believable crime and sorcery. The narration and characterisation by Rose Ackroyd is bang on target. I didn’t want the story to end…..which surely is the best recommendation. Can’t wait for Con’s next adventure xxx

Wow, and not in a good way
I like James Oswalds other books, a lot. For reasons that I can’t explain I started this book without reading the first two. Big mistake on my part. The story wasn’t too bad, it didn’t grip me like his others have. In fact there were long periods of boredom usually when Con was moaning about her latest injury. It was the narration that destroyed it for me. It sounded like a 12 year old reading a set piece for her O level. Didn’t like it at all. Totally ruined it for me.
Maybe I’m getting too hard to please, but I don’t really think so.

A decent story spoilt by silly stories of myths and similar nonsense. This is something that also detracts from James Oswald's otherwise excellent McClean novels.

Really solid character and plot
I took a while to get into this book, but it’s not as instantly intriguing as other Oswald books I’ve read. And one thing: Welsh cakes aren’t baked in an oven. The editor should really have picked that up. Small details but they can take you right out of the story. Overall very listenable though.
