Summary

In the summer of 1992, on the eve of an American tour, Ben Watt, one half of the Billboard-topping pop duo Everything but the Girl, was taken to a London hospital complaining of chest pain. He didn't leave for two and a half months. Watt had developed a rare life-threatening disease that initially baffled doctors. By the time he was allowed home, his ravaged body was 46 pounds lighter, and he was missing most of his small intestine. Watt injects pathos and humor into his medical nightmare, writing about his childhood, reflecting on his family, and discussing his shared life with band member and partner Tracey Thorn. The result is a provocative and affecting memoir about life, illness, and survival.

Great book

Great book all the scarier because it’s true. Makes one feel lucky to have my health. Makes me happy also to live in a country with free healthcare.

Staggering!

Just such an affecting piece of work. Was gripped for a whole weekend listening. What a series of trauma to go through, but beautifully recounted and so subtly and oddly full of quiet joy, hope and love.

Brilliant

I was an EBTG fan and remember the news stories of Ben Watt’s’ serious illness. This book is an amazingly well written telling from the patient’s point of view, warts and all. Watt writes prose as well as well as he writes songs and this is a gripping and engaging tale - with the added reassurance that he lived to tell the tale!

Inspiring

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Ben, you have a multiplicity of talents. This book was honest, tender, beautifully written and full of interesting medical and scientific details. I thoroughly recommend this book and am now downloading Romany and Tom.
Thanks so much!

Very relatable

Having had surgery 6 times in the last 10 years or so this is has been quite a therapeutic listen. That said Surgery is not a pre-requisite to enjoy this book!

Grim story

Really felt for the man; what an awful thing to happen to a young man with all his life ahead of him.
