Summary

Leipzig, 1930s Germany.

Hetty Heinrich is a young girl growing up under Nazi rule. With an SS Officer father, a brother in the Luftwaffe and a member of the BDM, Hetty is the epitome of a perfect German child. But Walter changes everything.

Blond-haired, blue-eyed, perfect-in-every-way Walter. The boy who saved her life. A Jew. As she falls more and more in love with a man who is against all she has been taught, Hetty begins to question everything. Will the steady march of dark forces destroy their world, or can love ultimately triumph?

Perfect for fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, The Book Thief and Kate Furnivall.

I found it a slow start but was totally hooked!

I found it hard to get into initially and nearly gave up but I am so pleased I stuck with it! I also initially didn't know if I could tolerate hettie in the start but loved her by the end. really touching mind bending story! was so interesting as one often thinks.. how did the Germans buy into all this and allow such brutality? but this really is a window into the past.

Moving in the extreme

The most beautifully told story of the best and the worst of humankind. Such real characters. Very very moving.

Brilliant

Was a bit reluctant to start this book, as I thought it may be a little depressing. Don’t get me wrong, there were very sad moments, but overall, this was a really lovely book, I thoroughly enjoyed it

Beautiful, moving and eloquent

Louise Fein’s first novel is a stunning and heart-felt love story and it’s consequences for Hetti and Walter. I loved it and the hope it gave me, despite the challenging parts, where everything appears to be going wrong. A brilliant debut, beautifully narrated. You will need several tissues.

one of the best books I've listened to.

I loved this book so much and the narration was perfect. Only tiny criticism is that it was probably a little drawn out in the middle. A wonderful historical love story which increased my understanding of how Germans on both sides experienced the war. I was not disappointed by the ending .

Gripping, must read

A must read for everyone who values freedom. Although a fiction book, it allows the reader to learn from the past in a very gripping way thanks to the brilliant story telling.
