About this listen

Your darkest moment is your most vulnerable…

Stephen Berry is about to jump off a bridge until a suicide prevention counsellor stops him. A week later, Stephen is dead. Found at the bottom of a cliff, DI Luc Callanach and DCI Ava Turner are drafted in to investigate whether he jumped or whether he was pushed…

As they dig deeper, more would-be suicides roll in: a woman found dead in a bath; a man violently electrocuted. But these are carefully curated deaths – nothing like the impulsive suicide attempts they’ve been made out to be.

Little do Callanach and Turner know how close their perpetrator is as, across Edinburgh, a violent and psychopathic killer gains more confidence with every life he takes…

Includes the short story Lost Property read by the author.

An unstoppable crime thriller from the #1 bestseller. The perfect read for fans of Karin Slaughter and M. J. Arlidge.

Compelling story

I was excited when the next DI Callanach audiobook came out. The story didn’t disappoint and I couldn’t stop listening.
I love the character of Callanach but I became pretty irritated by Ava. She’s clueless when it comes to reading people (surprising considering her job) and with Callanach she comes across as immature and petulant (this could be due to the narrator’s characterisation?).
She says and does thoughtless things and the big ‘bust-up’ even made me think that Callanach was better off without her. It’s a shame as I’ve lost interest in their relationship which was a big part of the series. The crime aspect was still strong though so I’m sure I’ll want to listen to the next instalment.

A Janet Monroe question

This book was brilliant as always and I’m not going to give any spoilers so I’ll say nothing about Luc and Ava!!!! However I do have a question why has Robin Laing given Janet Monroe a European accent????? I’ve just fast forwarded the previous book to find where she appears and as I thought she is Scottish. Maybe he forgot to switch accents and just kept kept going but I’m afraid it totally changed Janet Monroe’s character hence only four stars instead of the usual 5. Pedantic of me I know but characters become real when you listen to the book.

Casual Reading Thriller

Firstly, having the same narrator throughout this series is a much welcome surprise. For the most part I’ve enjoyed his performances and he makes the books very listenable. My only negatives would be that sometimes the Spanish and French characters sound, in my opinion, too similar so at points I wasn’t sure who was talking. Similarly *and spoiler* Astrid’s accent in this was a bit strange.

For the story itself, it was an interesting concept and I don’t mind the relationship development between Callanach and Turner though often find these things a bit cheesy and unnecessary. I am always a bit disappointed when I can guess whodunnit early on though and unfortunately this was one of them (there are two different cases and I personally found it a bit obvious for both of them so was more waiting for confirmation I was right rather than experiencing any surprising twists/turns. I think as a casual read/listen these books are great and I’ll certainly be reading any others that come along but for the more serious thriller/crime readers they’re probably a bit simplistic.

Love this series......

I waited for this audiobook for aaaaaaages and when it was finally released I couldn’t bring myself to listen....
With the previous books I enjoyed them so much that didn’t want them to end, I was so immersed....
and so I didn’t want another long wait for the next one once I’d finished this one......
This is a series that is well worth listening too....so much more than regular crime fiction.
(if you can get past book one with the comical narrator with the Inspector Cluso accent)
Book 2 narrator is lovely to listen to, really nails the french accent.

Brilliant!

I'm really enjoying the Luc Callanach series. This one certainly does not disappoint! Helen Fields is a brilliant author. The twists and turns keep the reader guessing right till the end. The characters are starting to really develop and the relationships between the main players keep the stories interesting and fresh.

A very good series, beautifully read

I do like the characters in this series and the will they/won't they is soooo frustrating.

But my favourite element is the narration. This guy is fab at any and the characters are from many different countries AND he doesn't do high, girly voices for women.

Another compelling story

I have really become involved with DCI Turner, DI Callanach and their friends and colleagues after 5 books, and much of this is due to the brilliant narrator Robin Laing. Robin has a great range of tones and accents, none of which feel laboured or stop the flow of the narration. I have just discovered that the next in the series will not be ready until 2020. What a blow. Well done Helen for producing text that is well written and never makes me wince or sigh, exciting plots, and twists and turns that always keep me guessing even when I think I've solved it. Thanks for a great series.

Excellent continuation of the series

Love this series and Robin Laing is continuing to deliver a great performance (well, aside from Astrid's accent which was just a bit weird). The details of the crimes are excellent. I did however find myself rushing through chapter 22 with the cringey bedroom scene.

I think the series is best read in order to get the most from the developing relationships between the main characters.
